Los Alamos National Laboratory Advanced Manufacturing - Post Master's Intern in Los Alamos, New Mexico

We are seeking outstanding students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds who are driven to make a difference. Selection into our program is competitive and based on academic excellence, relevant experience, and alignment with our program. We welcome applicants from a broad range of applied science disciplines, including but not limited to mechanical engineering, robotics, aerospace engineering, computer science, and physics.

As an intern with our group, you will work on cutting-edge engineering projects, either independently or as part of a team, under the mentorship of experienced LANL staff. Our mentors are experts in Advanced Manufacturing (AM), design for manufacturing, engineering analysis, experimentation, and sensor R&D.

You will have the opportunity to work with tools and languages such as LabVIEW, Solidworks, Python, Matlab, 3D printing slicers, and inspection software. You may also design, develop, and produce custom components like mounting fixtures, jigs, test apparatuses, and sensors. Additionally, you will have the opportunity gain experience in vacuums, microscopy, design of experiments, metrology, and hands-on R&D.

This internship is more than just a job-it's a chance to work on meaningful projects that have real-world applications. You'll gain hands-on experience, enhance your technical skills, and collaborate with some of the brightest minds in the field.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Education/Experience: Masters in any engineering discipline including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, materials engineering, or related discipline completed within the last 5 years. Applications from candidates who will earn their degree by the time of appointment are accepted.

  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a team environment, including exhibiting professional conduct in interactions with co-workers and supervisors.

  • A willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work assignments.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to communicate (verbally and written) well in a professional scientific context.

Clearance:

Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q-clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

Your application will be most competitive if you possess some of the following knowledge and skills:

  • Eagerness and demonstrated record of working as a member of small teams to accomplish tasks safely and efficiently.

  • Advanced Manufacturing (AM), design for manufacturing, engineering analysis, experimentation, and sensor R&D.

  • Knowledge of tools and languages such as LabVIEW, Solidworks, Python, Matlab, 3D printing slicers, and inspection software.

  • Knowledge of custom component design and development such as - mounting fixtures, jigs, test apparatuses, and sensors.

  • Previous experience in vacuums, microscopy, design of experiments, metrology, and hands-on R&D will set you apart.

  • Basic knowledge of, and the ability to, fabricate, test, and document engineering systems.

  • Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety, security, and quality.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
