Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Manual Machinist to support hands-on machining, maintenance, inspection, testing, and repair of valves, pumps, and related industrial equipment. This role is primarily shop-based and involves machining individual components, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and assisting with disassembly and reassembly of valves and actuators.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, can read and interpret blueprints and schematics, and is flexible to assist with a variety of shop and field tasks as operational needs arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform manual machining operations on individual components for valves, pumps, and other industrial equipment

  • Operate manual lathes, vertical and horizontal mills, surface grinders, cut-off saws, and drill presses

  • Machine parts to specified tolerances, typically .003"–.005" , with some work allowing wider tolerances as required

  • Support shop activities including valve maintenance, inspection, testing, cleaning, repair, and reassembly

  • Assist with pre- and post-testing of valves and pneumatic or electric actuators

  • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to guide machining, assembly, and repair work

  • Conduct failure assessments on valves and related equipment and communicate findings to supervision

  • Complete routine safety observations and inspections to help maintain a safe work environment

  • Assist with machine setup, changeovers, and job adjustments

  • Use additional shop tools such as grinders, shears, and drills to support fabrication and machining tasks

  • Collaborate with team members and support non-machining tasks when needed

  • Participate in field projects as required, including mobile machining operations using trailer-based equipment

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating manual lathes, mills (vertical and horizontal), surface grinders, cut-off saws, and drill presses

  • (Flexibility considered if experience is missing on one or two machines)

  • Strong understanding of manual machining fundamentals (open to entry-level machinists through experienced professionals)

  • Ability to hold machining tolerances typically within .003"–.005"

  • Blueprint and schematic reading skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on shop experience

  • Ability to perform failure assessments and clearly communicate findings

  • Team-oriented mindset with willingness to support shop and field operations

  • Openness to extended hours, with the ability to work 50–70 hours per week based on workload

  • Commitment to maintaining safety standards in a busy industrial shop

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with valves, including block valves, PSV, SRV, and pneumatic or electric actuators

  • Experience supporting maintenance, testing, and repair work in addition to machining

  • Comfort performing grinding, equipment changeovers, and general shop support tasks

  • Interest in career growth from entry-level machining to advanced shop and field responsibilities

  • Willingness to travel with a team for field work and mobile machining projects

Work Environment

This role is based in a traditional machine shop environment that is dusty, loud, and physically demanding , with exposure to metal shavings and heavy industrial equipment. You will work with a full range of manual machinery as well as mobile machining trailers. Work hours may extend to 50–70 hours per week depending on customer demand. Appropriate industrial workwear and PPE are required.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Longview, WA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
