Job Title: Machinist
Job Description
The Machinist sets up, programs, and operates CNC machines to perform drilling, milling, turning, and related machining operations on a variety of components. This role combines technical expertise, precision, and problem-solving skills to ensure all parts meet strict quality standards and engineering specifications. The successful candidate demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, extensive experience in precision machining, and the ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings and blueprints while working with advanced CNC equipment and precision measuring tools.
Responsibilities
Set up, program, and operate CNC milling machines and lathes, including 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC equipment, to perform drilling, milling, turning, and other machining operations.
Interpret and work from engineering drawings, blueprints, and sketches to determine machining requirements, dimensions, and tolerances.
Select appropriate tools, fixtures, and cutting parameters to achieve required finishes, dimensions, and production efficiency.
Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, verniers, calipers, height gauges, and other measuring tools to verify part dimensions and ensure adherence to specifications.
Perform CNC programming and editing, including working with G-code and M-code, to optimize machining processes and address production issues.
Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, and other conventional machine tools as required for custom or precision machining work.
Operate and adjust CNC controls, including Okuma, Siemens, or Heidenhain systems, to run programs safely and efficiently.
Troubleshoot machining problems, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to maintain quality and productivity.
Perform tool changes, offsets, and machine adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
Inspect parts during and after machining, using appropriate gauges and inspection methods, to ensure compliance with quality standards.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all shop procedures and safety guidelines.
Collaborate with programmers and other team members to improve machining processes, cycle times, and overall workflow.
Document work performed, including setup details and program changes, to support repeatability and continuous improvement.
Contribute to the full range of machining services in the shop, including CNC machining, precision grinding, manual turning and milling, and inspection support as needed.
Essential Skills
5+ years of previous work experience in a custom or precision machining shop.
Proficiency in setting up, operating, and programming 3- and 5-axis CNC machines.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and sketches.
Hands-on experience with CNC mills, CNC lathes, and manual lathes and mills.
Ability to use precision measuring tools, including micrometers, verniers, calipers, height gauges, and other inspection instruments.
Experience with CNC programming and editing using G-code and M-code.
Experience working with Okuma, Siemens, or Heidenhain CNC controls.
Solid mechanical aptitude and strong understanding of machining principles, tolerances, and finishes.
Demonstrated experience in precision machining and toolmaking in a machine shop environment.
Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Licensed Machinist and/or Tool and Die Maker (429A or 430A) is a strong asset.
Programming experience is strongly recommended; candidates with limited programming experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Knowledge of SolidWorks for interpreting and working with 3D models.
Experience with Mastercam, Edgecam, and AutoCAD for CNC programming and drafting.
Background in toolmaking, precision grinding, and manual machining is an advantage.
Familiarity with reading and interpreting schematics in addition to blueprints.
Experience working in a custom machine shop environment with a wide variety of parts and materials.

Work Environment
The role is based in a custom machine shop that offers a full range of machining services, including CNC machining, precision grinding, manual turning and milling, and comprehensive inspection capabilities. You will work with advanced CNC milling machines and lathes, including 3-, 4-, and 5-axis equipment, as well as manual machines and precision measuring instruments in a production environment focused on high-quality, custom and precision components. The position follows an afternoon shift schedule from Monday to Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The shop environment emphasizes accuracy, safety, and collaboration, with access to modern machining technologies and a structured inspection process to support high standards of quality.

The pay range for this position is $79040.00 - $87360.00/yr.
