Job Description

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis on the UK and the world. We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Your role: The Times is looking for a senior journalist to join our investigations team as Deputy Investigations Editor .

Applicants will have strong experience working on in-depth investigative news stories at a national level.

You will be an outstanding journalist with the ability to write engaging and informative copy. You must have experience working in a national newsroom, a boundless supply of ideas and contacts and a track record of breaking exclusives. Ideally you would also have extensive political contacts and a track record of producing political scoops.

Day to day you will:

  • Pitch ambitious, innovative investigations ideas and maintain excellent contacts

  • Consistently deliver accurate, engaging copy to strict deadlines

  • Conceive and deliver large scale digital news projects

  • Work closely with the news desk, the investigations team and journalists across the newsroom to ensure stories are covered comprehensively

  • Regularly pitch and contribute to digital packages that increase engagement and support subscriber growth

  • Work closely with the head of investigations to manage investigations projects and support more junior team members with their work

  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote Times investigations content

  • Represent The Times on radio, television and other media - especially our internal stations

  • Command respect and authority in investigative journalism and communicate that knowledge effectively in print, digital, radio and television as a representative of The Times

  • Collaborate with production colleagues in design, pictures and sub-editing on elements that enhance the stories you write

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Experience working as a senior investigative journalist for a national newspaper, magazine or newswebsite

  • Strong contacts and a proven ability to bring in exclusive stories, ideally in political news

  • Experience working closely with legal teams and senior editors to ensure investigations are legally watertight

  • Demonstrable experience managing people

  • Experience in digital and a commitment to growing our digital audience

  • Able to work autonomously and to strict deadlines

  • Keen attention to detail and meticulous fact-checking

  • Excellent presentation skills and able to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Experience working collaboratively

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
