Description & Requirements

Last year, the South African G20 Presidency helped to deliver a global first for international carbon market infrastructure – a voluntary, common foundation for carbon credit data standardisation, known as the Common Carbon Credit Data Model (‘Data Model’). This is a critical step to resolving one of the market infrastructure obstacles that prevents carbon credit markets from scaling – and channeling potential tens of billions of annual, debt-free dollars to emerging markets and developing economies.

The Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC) Secretariat is now piloting and testing the Data Model with interested jurisdictions and market participants. This role is therefore a unique and exciting opportunity for the right candidate to bring to bear deep technical skills in support of a project with global reach and impact. It would also offer unparalleled opportunity to gain insight into how to support effective policy making around carbon markets across a set of major markets and the wider private sector.

Background

The CDSC was established in 2022 by French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions Michael R. Bloomberg. Chaired by Mary Schapiro, the CDSC brings together global policymakers, regulators, and international organisations, informed by data providers and civil society, to improve access to standardised climate data.

Under the South African G20 Presidency, the Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) identified unlocking the financing potential of carbon markets as one of its three priorities for 2025, with a particular focus on improving carbon credit data standardisation. As the Lead Knowledge Partner for this priority, the CDSC oversaw the development of the Data Model. The Data Model provides guidance on standardisation of key data fields across the carbon credit lifecycle, from pre-issuance to retirement.

What’s the role?

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer/Architect to join our team and support work to pilot the Data Model with carbon market participants such as registries, exchanges, and project developers for example, as well as with policymakers and regulators.

The candidate would ideally have some knowledge of carbon markets and the opportunities and challenges relating to data standardisation or a strong interest in learning about these markets quickly. In return, we can offer an insight into how to progress globally influential work, involving governments, standard setting bodies and the wider carbon markets ecosystem. The role will involve travel to support our global work.

We’ll trust you to:

  • Work with a team to support countries and market participants – in piloting the Data Model – to map data schemas, pilot workflows, and test data interoperability across their data systems, including working “in country” for short periods

  • Develop written and technical resources to support piloting and voluntary adoption, for example data mapping tables, user guides, stakeholder role matrixes, etc.

  • Work closely with carbon market infrastructure providers and engineering teams to embed the Data Model in schemas, APIs, exchange protocols and other technical infrastructure

  • Outline technical roadmaps to support piloting and collaborate with the CDSC Secretariat to manage timelines, deliverables, and tracking of actions for piloting partners

  • Create and maintain processes for updating the Data Model in response to feedback from the pilots and public consultation, balancing data standardisation best practices and policymaker/market needs

  • Synthesise technical findings and complex topics to senior stakeholders in an accessible manner

We’ll need you to have:

  • A bachelor's degree in a quantitative subject – information sciences, computer sciences or related discipline preferred

  • At least 3 years of professional experience with demonstrable expertise in data engineering/architecting data models as well as implementing and productionising them

  • Familiarity with carbon credit markets or a willingness to get up to speed quickly

  • Strong analytic skills in data/software engineering, including experience with taxonomy and ontology development, proficiency in Excel and coding languages such as SQL or Python

  • Familiarity with relational databases and data modeling tools

  • Experience working with APIs and other applications to exchange data

  • Understanding of data management discipline, including overarching data model maintenance and governance processes

  • Experience working across multiple teams or projects and delivering to tight deadlines

  • A willingness to travel with us to support brief periods of work in specific countries with either public or private sector stakeholders

  • A collaborative approach and exceptional relationship building and communication skills – both written and verbal

We’d love to see:

  • Experience engineering backend data infrastructure, ideally (but not necessarily) with a relevant organisation - for example with an emissions inventory or carbon credit registry

  • Familiarity with financial markets data and market infrastructure best practices, including setting and implementing global unique identifiers for projects or securities
