What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the advanced RV warhead demonstrators. Advanced and Exploratory Systems Engineering identifies and evaluates systems engineering knowledge gaps and concepts for potential future warhead programs, providing high level criteria to component engineering teams to facilitate technology maturation. The Demonstrator's team is high-tempo Systems Engineering team and works with our stakeholders to design and develop warhead system demonstrations on rapid timelines through effective collaboration across Sandia. The result of our work advances our knowledge of weapon design to prepare for the next system programs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Identify or reaffirm the need for existing or new capabilities to design the weapons of the future and distill this information into knowledge gaps or design criteria and concepts.

  • Collaborate with systems engineers, facilitate electrical design and develop high level requirements

  • Identify, plan, design, and execute technology maturation activities and demonstrators

  • Plan and conduct electrical tests to verify technology solutions and demonstrate closure of knowledge gaps

  • Develop system prototypes of various concepts

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to other electrical engineers on the team to realize our demonstrator products

    Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite

Salary Range:

$139,900 - $280,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, and 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

  • Active DOE Q or equivalent to start

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

    Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis.

  • Hands-on experience testing and de-bugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.

  • Proven experience with design and analysis tools (e.g., Matlab and LabVIEW), analog simulation codes (e.g., LTSpice), and HDL simulation codes (e.g.,ModelSim).

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Design of weapon electrical systems or subsystems.

  • Understanding nuclear effects, including shielding design and performance, as well as circuit design techniques to mitigate these effects for high-consequence systems.

  • Defining model-based electrical systems and implementing them in CAMEO or similar tools.

  • Defining requirements for electrical systems in collaboration with component teams.

  • Experience with nuclear weapon reliability, safety, or surety, and the ability to synthesize military requirements into innovative solutions.

  • Proven technical background with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Cable design, manufacturing, and fabrication.

  • Product realization experience.

  • Demonstrated qualities:

  • Independent resourcefulness in developing new ideas or programs.

  • Ability to conduct engineering work within a systems context.

  • Success in navigating requirements ambiguity.

  • Experienced in nuclear weapons across the lifecycle and/or a breadth of weapon systems with big ideas on how to shape the future of weapon design.

About Our Team:

The Weapon Subsystems 4 department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems for high consequence applications requiring exceptionally high confidence, quality and reliability. These projects enhance the safety and security of assets that are critical to US national security, including the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
