Job Description

The Managing Director sets the strategic direction and drives the growth and performance of Napier Turbochargers. An appreciation of turbocharger performance, engine interaction and technology and market trends enables the identification and development of new business opportunities. While not an engineering role, the position requires credible engagement in technical discussions and the ability to set clear strategic direction in consultation with subject-matter experts, balancing commercial and operational priorities.

Key Objectives

  • Define and deliver the company's strategy in alignment with long-term ambitions and near-term priorities

  • Ensure efficient, scalable and profitable operations across the business

  • Provide clear direction to senior management, ensuring alignment, accountability and effective decision-making

  • Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, investment prioritisation and cost control

  • Maintain effective relationships with all stakeholders; customers, partners and regulators

  • Establish clear performance targets and ensure they are met

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal and government requirements

Core Responsibilities

Strategic and Operational Direction

  • Translate business vision into practical strategies and executable plans

  • Balance commercial, technical and operational inputs when making high-impact decisions

  • Monitor market trends, customer needs and technology development to identify growth opportunities

Technical Understanding & Decision Support

  • Develop a sound working knowledge of Napier Turbocharger technologies and their integration with customer engines

  • Engage confidently in technical discussions, ask the right questions and interpret complex information

  • Provide clear direction and prioritisation based on inputs from engineering, operations and commercial experts

  • Act as an effective bridge between technical specialists and business objectives, ensuring decisions are well-informed and commercially sound

People & Organisations

  • Build strong, capable senior teams through coaching and support

  • Encourage collaboration across engineering, manufacturing and commercial functions

  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and disciplined execution

  • Ensure values, behaviours and daily practices remain aligned

Financial & Government Oversight

  • Ensure responsible resource allocation and long-term financial sustainability

  • Maintain robust governance, risk management and ethical standards

  • Oversee compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the company with credibility to customers, partners and external stakeholders

  • Build sustained trust through consistency, transparency and informed decision-making

Required Skills & Experience

  • A degree in any discipline and an MBA or Senior Executive Leadership programmes are preferable

  • 15+ years experience in senior general management or executive roles

  • Strong commercial and financial acumen with a track record of driving profitability and growth

  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in technically complex environments

  • Proven capability to understand, challenge and synthesise technical information without being a subject-matter expert

  • Sound judgement, structured problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under uncertainty

  • Excellent communication skills, particularly in translating complex issues into clear direction

Preferred Experience

  • Background in manufacturing, industrial or technology-driven businesses

  • Experience working closely with engineering-led organisations or highly engineered products

  • Familiarity with industrial engine systems, rotating machinery or adjacent technologies would be desirable

  • Exposure to innovation, digitalisation and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Executive or advanced management development certification

Success in the role

The successful Managing Director will combine commercial insight, operational rigour and technical awareness. While they may not be an engineer by qualification, they will be credible in technical dialogue, able to make sense of complex interactions between Napier's products and customer engines, and confident in setting direction in consultation with experts.
