Quality & Safety Manager

The Opportunity:

The Quality & Safety Manager is a dual\u2011responsibility role with primary accountability for leading and overseeing all Quality functions within the facility, while also serving as the site\u2019s Safety Leader.

In the Quality capacity, this role ensures that all product and process quality standards are consistently met and maintained. This includes understanding, implementing, and enforcing Customer, Regulatory, and Smurfit WestRock processes, policies, and procedures. The Quality & Safety Manager will lead internal and external complaint resolution, manage and execute audits, and support efficient, compliant, and smooth operations throughout the production facility.

As a Safety Leader, this role leads and motivates employees to cultivate a culture of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) excellence. This includes mitigating risks, preventing accidents and illnesses, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting safe, environmentally responsible behaviors integrated into daily operations.

This critical dual\u2011function role reports directly to the site\u2019s General Manager.

This is an onsite position working full time at the Lexington, KY facility.

How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:

  • Review, approve, and execute facility and corporate standard operating procedures for site implementation

  • Coordinate and execute internal, customer, supplier, subcontractor, and regulatory audits

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with current policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and customer requirements

  • Coordinate and execute investigation of detected risks or failures, complaints, and corrective/preventative actions

  • Work closely with production managers to maximize product quality and reliability and minimize cost

  • Track, analyze, and lead initiatives for all internal quality and customer complaint issues

  • Determine, document, and approve site-specific or one-time occurrences such as protocols (reworks, validations, etc.), deviations (planned or unplanned), waivers, or releases for materials and products as required

  • Leverage enterprise technology to analyze quality complaints, track corrective and preventive actions, and use data to isolate and track defective parts per million, over shipments, and resolve issues related to rejected products when applicable

  • Execute facility improvement initiatives as determined from performance data

  • Lead team of quality technicians and Safe Quality Foods (SQF) readiness resources, ensuring that processes are efficient, and work is appropriately prioritized

  • Provide tools and training for quality management and quality improvement to the facility staff.

  • Safety programs include, but are not limited to, pedestrian traffic, power industrial trucks/mobile equipment, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), machine guarding, working from heights, ergonomics, material handling/dock safety, job safe planning, electrical safety, contractor safety, walking/working surfaces, confined spaces, hot work, line and equipment opening (LEO), and hazardous communication.

What you need to succeed:

  • Bachelor\u2019s degree required or comparable experience; High School diploma required

  • 3+ years of Quality and/or Safety leadership experience\u202Fin a corrugated facility and familiarity with equipment and product as it relates to quality.

  • Well-versed in analytical and statistical applications that support quality such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Statistical Quality Control (SQC)

  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills\u202Fto engage and inspire others to comply with quality standards.

  • Proven track record of problem-solving.

  • Thorough knowledge of quality standards and methodologies.

  • Ability to learn proprietary software programs and leverage enterprise complaint management software.

  • Professional training and quality certification courses (e.g. Six Sigma, ISO Certification) are preferred.
