Summary:
The Director of Nursing is the leader of the team accountable for 24 hour / 7 day a week management of clinical nursing practice, patient care delivery, the management of human resources, as well as fiscal responsibility for all areas assigned for the hospital. The Director has oversight responsibility for day-to-day operations at the hospital. The Director will be responsible for the retention and development of existing personnel as well as fostering interdisciplinary collaborative relationships within selected units or areas of responsibility and the ministry as a whole. The Director will be responsible for compliance with regulatory and professional standards and participate in strategic planning for the hospital. The Director has oversight responsibility for the staffing function and operations within nursing and coordinates the float pool for maximum flexibility to meet patient care needs. The Director supports the goals and principles of the Magnet Journey, Shared Governance model and Unit Practice Councils, and collaborates with nursing leadership, in implementing initiatives and processes that focus on staff recruitment and retention and staff engagement. This is achieved through integrating evidence based practice and research into clinical practice and leading various projects that support clinical excellence. In addition collaborates with the System Nursing Directors in coordinating quality and safety data, initiatives and activities for adult population focusing on initiatives to improve outcomes and achieve targets. The Director will coordinate, plan and oversee the Patient Advisory Council at the hospital. The Director supports, plans, implements, and evaluates the goals and policies of the hospital and Catholic Health.
Mount St. Mary’s Hospital consists of multiple locations and associate may be assigned as needed.
Responsibilities:
EDUCATION
BSN required
Master’s Degree required or in progress and completed within one (1) year in position
Current New York State Registration
Nationally recognized nursing certification required or within one (1) year in position, preferably Nursing Executive, Advanced
Current BLS and ACLS or within six (6) months required
EXPERIENCE
Three (3) or more years of clinical nursing experience/charge nurse experience
Three (3) to five (5) years progressive supervisory/management experience within an acute setting
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Interpersonal skills necessary to work productively and effectively with all levels of unit personnel, as well as with physicians, families, and visitors
Ability to manage the activities of a diverse group of professional, nonprofessional, and clerical employees
Possesses strong listening skills
Strong written & verbal communication skills
Strong planning skills to develop goals and objectives in concert with those of the hospital and the ability to implement action plans to meet those goals
Analytical ability to identify opportunities for improvements as well as positive problem resolution
Teaching abilities to promote optimum orientation and continuing education of staff
Advance knowledge of Performance Improvement Initiatives and able to identify areas for improvement and carry out measurable action plans
Budgeting skills to control fiscal operations of selected unit(s) and/or area(s) of responsibility, and to identify and explain variances
Has current knowledge of health care trends and issues and relates same to hospital and work area environment
Occasional prolonged standing, walking, sitting
