The Controls Engineer plans, designs, and programs projects related to the installation and operation of direct digital control (DDC) and building automation systems. This role acts as a key technical liaison between the design team and the field and project management teams, ensuring that building automation solutions are well-designed, properly implemented, and meet performance and quality expectations.
Responsibilities
Design all hardware and software components required to deliver complete and fully functioning DDC and building automation systems in accordance with project documentation and established engineering standards and guidelines.
Research design alternatives, develop pricing, prepare specification sheets, and identify appropriate suppliers to verify that the proposed design will function as required.
Develop programming for the operation of HVAC mechanical and electrical equipment based on design documents, including DDC programming at the equipment level and graphical implementation (2D and 3D) at the upper-level front-end graphical user interface (GUI).
Research equipment compatibility and product quality, and contribute to the enhancement and continuous improvement of current system designs.
Collaborate closely with project management to review and validate sales estimates, including performing post-sale re-estimates to assist with effective project budget management.
Assist the project manager in developing accurate engineering time estimates and engineering schedules, and take accountability for completing engineering deliverables on time while meeting quality standards.
Coordinate with the project manager and purchasing department to support timely and accurate material ordering for assigned projects.
Provide customer training on building automation and control systems as needed to ensure proper understanding and operation of installed systems.
Offer input and feedback to operations leadership to support process improvements and operational excellence.
Work and collaborate effectively with other team members, maintaining active communication with colleagues working on the same project to ensure alignment and smooth project execution.
Assist with equipment startup, point-to-point checkout, system commissioning, and project turnover to ensure systems operate as designed and meet project requirements.
Maintain customer satisfaction by investigating concerns, implementing appropriate corrective actions, and communicating clearly with customers and internal staff.
Assist in the preparation of bid documents and presentation materials, including technical data and drawings (such as Visio diagrams), to support sales and proposal efforts.
Generate submittals, operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals, and as-built drawings in accordance with project requirements and timelines.
Travel as needed, including occasional overnight trips, to visit customer sites, support project execution, and provide on-site technical assistance.
Essential Skills
Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience in controls engineering, building automation, or a closely related field is preferred.
Engineering degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Strong familiarity with the operation of energy management systems, HVAC systems, temperature controls, and process control systems.
Proficiency with computers and common software tools, including Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to design hardware and software for DDC and building automation systems based on project documentation and engineering standards.
Ability to develop DDC programming for HVAC mechanical and electrical equipment and implement graphical interfaces at the front-end GUI level.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to research equipment compatibility, evaluate product quality, and resolve technical issues.
Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with project managers, field teams, and customers.
Customer service orientation and strong people skills to maintain customer satisfaction and provide training.
Ability to manage time effectively, meet engineering schedules, and deliver high-quality work within project deadlines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with building automation systems and building automation controls.
Experience preparing technical bid documents, including drawings and supporting materials.
Experience creating submittals, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation for building automation projects.
Ability to contribute feedback to operations leadership and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Comfort with frequent interaction with customers, including conducting training and addressing concerns.
Willingness and ability to travel, including occasional overnight trips, to support project and customer needs.
Work Environment
This role is primarily based in a typical office environment, with regular visits to customer offices and job sites. Frequent travel is required to visit customers, including outdoor travel to various locations. During visits to job sites, the Controls Engineer may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in job site environments can vary and may at times be elevated due to active mechanical and electrical equipment. Standard office technology such as computers running Windows and Microsoft Office is used regularly for design, documentation, and communication. Field work may require appropriate safety gear and adherence to site-specific safety practices.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.
