Utility Packer

Job Description

The Utility Packer works on a fast-paced packaging line handling frozen vegetables. In this role, you sort, bag, box, and package frozen products while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and sanitation. This is a contract-to-hire position with an initial three-month duration and involves working in a cold, wet production environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work on the packaging line to sort, bag, box, and package frozen vegetables according to production requirements.

  • Dump, pack, and stack frozen products efficiently and safely.

  • Pack products into correctly labeled cases and various packaging receptacles to ensure accurate weighing and sealing for shipment.

  • Inspect products to remove blemishes and any foreign material, maintaining quality standards.

  • Perform sanitation of all packing lines in accordance with established sanitation programs.

  • Follow all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety guidelines, operational procedures, and sanitation programs at all times.

  • Maintain general housekeeping standards in all work areas, ensuring cleanliness and organization as required of all employees.

  • Stack finished product onto specific pallet types following established patterns and guidelines.

  • Operate the facility dump station when required, following proper safety and operating procedures.

  • Work effectively in a cold and wet environment while maintaining productivity and attention to detail.

  • Lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds as needed during the shift.

  • Contribute to quality assurance by performing necessary quality checks on all items before they leave the facility.

  • Meet production targets in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and safety.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2–3 months of packing or production experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or similar environment.

  • Ability to perform general labor tasks including packing, sorting, stacking, and material handling.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced production setting with moving conveyor lines.

  • Strong attention to detail to identify and remove blemished product and foreign material.

  • Ability to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety procedures, and sanitation guidelines consistently.

  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods during the shift.

  • Willingness and ability to work in a cold and wet environment with temperatures around 35–40°F in production areas.

  • Basic understanding of quality assurance responsibilities, including conducting quality checks on outgoing products.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in packaging, warehouse packing, or production work with frozen or food products.

  • Comfort operating basic production equipment such as dump stations under proper supervision and training.

  • Reliability in attendance and ability to meet production expectations.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-focused environment on shared production lines.

  • Flexibility to work different shifts and occasional Saturdays as production demands require.

Work Environment

The role is based in a refrigerated production facility that is wet and cold, with temperatures typically around 35–40°F in the production area and approximately 0°F in the freezer. Production workers rarely need to enter the freezer area, but should be comfortable working in consistently cold conditions. The environment is fast-paced, with products moving along conveyor lines that require quick and accurate packing and inspection. Shifts are structured as follows: First shift runs from early morning to mid-afternoon, Monday through Friday, with potential work on Saturday; second shift runs from mid-afternoon to late evening, Monday through Friday, with potential Saturday work; third shift runs overnight from late evening to early morning, Sunday through Thursday, with potential additional hours as needed. Employees should expect to wear appropriate cold-environment and food-production attire in line with GMPs and safety and sanitation requirements.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr.
