Position Summary Information

General Summary

This is a non-merit, employment-at-will contract position.

TheSr. IT Infrastructure Engineeris responsible for the hands-on support, installation, and maintenance of physical IT infrastructure across WSSC Water. This includes deploying network cabling (copper, fiber etc.), setting up and maintaining communications IT closets, installing wireless access points and large display monitors, installing and managing UPS systems, and ensuring all related systems are functioning optimally.

Essential Functions

  • Install, terminate, and test copper (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A) and fiber optic cabling

  • Maintain IT communication/network closets, ensuring organization and accessibility

  • Install and mount Wireless Access Points (WAPs) throughout the facility

  • Install, monitor, and maintain Uninterruptible Power Supplies ( UPS ) for critical infrastructure

  • Monitor IT infrastructure UPS alerts and resolve issues in a timely manner

  • Install and configure large display monitors (TVs) for AV operational use

  • Assist with equipment inventory, labeling, and documentation of installations

  • Collaborate with network engineers and other IT staff to support infrastructure projects

  • Follow company safety standards and structured cabling best practices

  • Develops and maintains documentation and drawings including addressing plans, network topology diagrams, rack elevation, data flows and other technical documentation in a comprehensive and timely manner

  • Perform cable pulls, dressing, labeling, and rack/cabinet cable management

  • Support installation of patch panels, jacks, racks, cable trays, and pathways

  • Conduct continuity and certification testing using Fluke or equivalent testers

  • Identify and troubleshoot Layer 1 issues such as bad cables, loose terminations, or patching errors

  • Work with Network Engineers to escalate and verify Layer 1 connectivity issues

  • Maintain accurate documentation of cabling layouts and labeling standards

  • Adhere to safety and quality standards during installations

  • Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Other Functions

  • Assists in the development and implementation of a preventive maintenance program.

  • Provides support for cable plant management for data circuits in areas of testing, installations, and disconnections.

  • Stays abreast of the latest trends in data equipment, technologies, and trends and make recommendations regarding user, design, and implementation based on analysis

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities

  • Strong understanding of Layer 1 of the OSI model

  • Knowledge of structured cabling standards and network hardware installation.

  • Ability to read and follow network infrastructure diagrams and floor plans

  • Strong attention to detail and labeling discipline

  • Proficiency with copper and fiber installation, termination, and testing

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • 8+ years experience in IT infrastructure, network cabling, or similar field

  • Experience using tools such as punch-down tools, crimpers, cable testers, tone and probe kits

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer

  • The primary work shift is Monday through Friday during normal business hours; however, employee(s) must be available, as required, to work as needed on a 24-hour on-call basis, odd and irregular hours and various shifts

Preferences

  • Associate’s degree or technical certification in IT or related field preferred

  • Data Center Expert software

  • BICSI Installer or equivalent certification

  • Fluke DSX certification testing experience

  • Experience with structured cabling projects in data centers or enterprise environments

  • Familiarity with basic Layer 2 concepts (e.g., VLANs, switch ports)

Salary$108,233 - $184,288
