Nature of Work

Performs general grounds keeping and landscaping duties for the Water Production systems. Maintains facilities, assists in the repair and operation of a variety of water production and wastewater treatment plant equipment, and maintains safe and clean environments.

Environmental Factors

Position functions approximately twenty-five (25) percent indoors and seventy-five (75) percent outdoors with exposure to all types of weather and traffic conditions; exposure to extreme noise, mechanical, electrical, and burn hazards, toxic fumes, gases, dust, moving equipment and vehicles, and areas with poor ventilation. Protective clothing and devices include eye protection, hard hats, and hearing protection.

Physical Factors

Heavy physical effort is required to perform job functions including lift and carry items weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds; pushing and pulling items weighing up to one-thousand (1,000) pounds; frequent balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing, squatting, and kneeling; occasional reaching above shoulder height. Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, or other communication capabilities, vision or other powers of observation, manual dexterity, and personal mobility and physical reflexes sufficient to effectively and efficiently perform essential job functions.

Work Situation Factors

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

This position is graded at BC06.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs general upkeep and cleaning of facilities, locations, and sites; collects and removes trash and debris to ensure neat and clean assigned areas.

  • Uses various tools and small equipment to maintain facilities, removes weeds, mows grass and landscape, and maintains grounds.

  • Performs general maintenance of facilities to include sand blasting, painting, and pouring concrete slabs.

  • Operates and maintains sprinkler systems to ensure uniform distribution of water and maintains the condition of the grounds.

Minimum Qualifications

No minimum educational requirement. Six (6) months experience performing general grounds and/or building maintenance. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to effective landscaping, grounds, and facility maintenance; safe and effective use of related chemicals, supplies, materials, tools and equipment; principles ; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
