This work unit exists to provide the Division of Parks and Wildlife, Parks and Wildlife Commission, and other state and federal agencies new knowledge, concepts, theories, and models that can be used to enhance, preserve, and protect aquatic wildlife and their habitats by conducting statewide research on aquatic wildlife populations, communities, and ecosystems, and users of those resources. This work unit’s basic mission is to generate knowledge concerning, but not limited to, Colorado’s sport and native fish species.

Description of Job

This position acts as the work unit leader at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Bellvue Fish Research Hatchery. Operations at this facility are designed to support Research Section activities related to fish culture, disease investigations, broodstock development, and other studies where controlled hatchery environments are needed.

Supervise and Operate Fish Research Hatchery

Supervise, oversee, and delegate daily operations of the CPW Fish Research Hatchery including accountability for facility maintenance, all aspects of fish culture, procurement, administrative functions, security, disinfection, reporting, and other functions as necessary. Organize and coordinate work activities of full-time, temporary, students and contract personnel.

Fish Culture Activities

Feed fish, clean screens, monitor water quality, record temperatures, maintain production records, inventory stock, mark fish, incubate eggs, sort and load fish. Stock fish, complete transport documentation, ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained.

Coordinate and Collaborate on Research Studies

Coordinate with aquatic researchers, biologists, hatchery staff, CPW Fish Health Lab, State and Federal personnel and others impacted by work performed at this facility. Intra- and interagency collaboration including research project design and execution, annual internal report preparation, INAD reporting, recommendations to various recovery teams. Provide technical support and expertise to these groups on subjects related to the propagation of threatened or endangered aquatic species.

Research Communication

Provides information and compiles research data observed and recorded during daily manipulations of studied aquatic species.. Disseminates information, both written and oral. Contributes in a variety of ways to research documents including those that may be published by the lead researcher including, but not limited to, annual internal reports and reports to other federal or private agencies or groups which provide funding or are cooperators on projects.

Oversight and Budgeting

Execute and implement CPW policies, directives, rules and regulations related to Fish Research Hatchery operations. Attends and represents the hatchery at meetings with staff, interagency personnel, and the public. Plans and allocates funds to meet long range goals for operations and development. Authorize, audit and monitor expenditures and accounts for unit operations.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Five (5) years of work experience in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Fisheries Research , or a closely related field.

Substitutions

  • Appropriate education in Biology, Aquatic Biology/Fishery Science/Aquaculture/Fishery Management will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position.

  • Current or former hatchery and/or research experience relevant to this position.

  • Strong scientific writing and communication skills.

Required Competencies

  • Strong aquaculture and fisheries research skills.

  • Understanding and implementation of scientific method and attention to detail.

    Conditions of Employment

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.

  • Must be willing and able to live in State housing on the fish hatchery and provide after-hours security, monitoring of water flows, power, and fish health issues as well as responding to emergency situations.

  • Must be available for on-call to receive phone calls or work after hours to help resolve fish health and safety issues related to hatchery operations. Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure fish health, safety, and welfare.

  • Must be willing and able to exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 lbs. frequently and/or in excess of 20 lbs. constantly to move objects

  • Must be willing and able to withstand exposure to weather, noise, and atmospheric conditions.

  • Must be willing and able to withstand the following hazards: proximity to moving, mechanical parts; exposure to electrical shock; working in high, exposed places; exposure to radiant energy; working with explosives; and/or exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Must be able to possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement.

  • Pre-employment physical, drug testing, and background check required.

  • Required to work holidays and weekends as part of a rotating work schedule.

  • Required to live in onsite, state provided housing, exempt from overtime, on-call 24/7.

  • This position will require but is not limited to the handling of Formalin, bleach, disinfection solutions, equipment batteries, gasoline, diesel, spray paint and motor oil.

  • Hazing predatory birds/animals will require the use and discharge of cracker/pyrotechnics as a deterrent.

  • Daily, weekly, monthly fish deliveries can result in overnight travel as needed; various meetings.
