Ingham County Human Resources Temporary/Seasonal Engineering Assistant in Lansing, Michigan

Temporary / Seasonal -- Full-Time temporary positions available

mid-May 2026 through mid-September 2026

(Dates are subject to change, extended vacations are not allowed June through August)

Annual Salary:* $15.00 - $20.00/hour Commensurate with experience and qualifications/certifications*

Location:  Ingham County Road Department, Administration Building, 301 Bush Street, Mason

Essential Functions

Under the supervision of the Construction Engineer or Director of Engineering will perform all types of engineering related tasks including, but not limited to topographic surveying, construction staking, paving inspection, material testing, CAD drafting, computer database input, quantity measurement and calculations, printing, collecting traffic volume and turning counts, collecting and logging road department infrastructure information, and updating annual resurfacing inventory maps.

Employment Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Michigan Driver's License and reliable transportation to assigned office building. Must be willing to work between the hours of 6:30am - 5:00pm weekdays. Must successfully pass a comprehensive drug screening and physical exam. Computer proficiency required. Civil engineering coursework preferred.

Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk on various types of terrain and work outside in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods, bend and squat repeatedly.
  • Must be able to drive construction stakes with an eight-pound sledge hammer.
  • Will be exposed to road and bridge construction sites.
  • Will be exposed to hot asphalt and diesel engine fumes and work in and around construction materials and machinery.
  • Must be able to lift weights in excess of 50 pounds.

Demonstrates effective communication skills by engaging, interacting and working with all individuals to ensure clarity and understanding in all interactions.
