TEMPORARY/FULL TIME - SHERIFF'S OFFICE- SHERIFF'S DEPUTY LAW ENFORCEMENT RECRUIT SPONSORSHIP

 

*This will be for the Mid-Michigan Police Academy starting in Mid August 2026  *

The hourly wage is $20.00 per hour while attending the Academy

General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Training Sergeant, this opportunity is for applicants who have never been through a police academy or MCOLES certification has lapsed.  Candidates who are hired will be sent to the 17-week Mid-Michigan Police Academy, a certified law enforcement academy, located at Lansing Community College.  Upon successful completion of this academy, recruits will be hired as entry-level Law Enforcement Sheriff's Deputies and must successfully complete the Ingham County Sheriff's Office Field Training Program.

Essential Functions: * Listed are those for a Law Enforcement (Field) Sheriff Deputy*

  1. Respond to citizen requests for service, appropriately documenting the incident when necessary.
  2. Conduct initial and follow-up investigations on crimes.
  3. Respond to, investigate, and render first aid at accidents.
  4. Provide traffic enforcement and policing.
  5. Provide residential and business security checks.
  6. Provide security at special events.
  7. Provide security at courts.
  8. Assist other agencies requesting assistance.
  9. Provide prisoner transport for court, hospital, and other appointments.
  10. Perform various administrative duties as directed. These include bank deposits, getting the mail, etc.
  11. Maintain documentation as required by the Department. This includes the daily log, time tracking, incident reports, vehicle maintenance, requests, etc.
  12. Attend court on and off duty when required by subpoena.
  13. Attend and participate in Sheriff's Office authorized training.
  14. Work mandatory overtime when directed by a supervisor.
  15. Follow lawful orders from their superior officers concerning all aspects of the Sheriff's office pertaining to assignments, duties and tasks.

Other Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attend an academically and physically demanding 17 week police academy.

Employment Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement to be considered.  Associates degree/equivalent preferred.

Experience: A minimum of one year or more equivalent life experience such as: employment, internship, coaching, volunteer work.

Other Requirements: 

  • Must be able to pass the MCOLES Reading and Writing Test
  • Must be able to pass the MCOLES Physical Fitness Test
