Cognizant Senior Product Owner — Order Management System (OMS) in Lansing, Michigan

About the role

As a Senior Product Owner (OMS) , you will drive the discovery and delivery of a custom‑built Order Management System , helping transform a legacy OMS into a modern, microservices‑based platform. You’ll be a key member of a cross‑functional Discovery Pod, partnering closely with engineering, architecture, and product leadership to define capabilities from the ground up—often in high‑ambiguity contexts with limited SME availability.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead Quarterly & PI Planning (SAFe) by setting clear, outcome‑based objectives; sequencing scope; and providing high‑quality PI inputs (prioritization, dependency mapping, risk identification, capacity assumptions) with traceability from objectives → features → stories.

  • Own and refine the team backlog , ensuring near‑term work meets Definition of Ready with crisp acceptance criteria, workflows, and testable outcomes—while maintaining visibility 1–2 PIs ahead and keeping the next sprint execution‑ready.

  • Provide hands‑on OMS domain leadership across order lifecycle, omnichannel fulfillment (Pickup, Delivery, Ship‑to‑Home/Store), cancellations/returns/refunds, inventory & sourcing (including vendor/DFC flows), and post‑order modifications; define business rules, guardrails, and exception paths (fraud, validation failures, retries/compensations).

  • Shape technical & architectural direction in an integration‑heavy environment: partner with engineering/architecture on enablers and non‑functional requirements (performance, resiliency, observability), discuss APIs/events and integration patterns, and sequence functional/technical work to reduce rework and integration risk.

  • Manage dependencies, risks, and outcomes across teams/ARTs; surface issues early, drive mitigations, and inspect/adjust plans using delivery and product metrics within each PI/quarter.

Work model

We strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a remote position open to qualified applicants in the United States. Regardless of your working arrangement, we support a healthy work‑life balance through our wellbeing programs. Working arrangements are accurate as of the date of posting and may change with business and client needs; we will always be clear about expectations.

What you need to have to be considered

  • Deep OMS domain expertise (non‑negotiable): 9 to 12 years with enterprise OMS (e.g., Manhattan, Blue Yonder, IBM Sterling, or custom‑built), with credible hands‑on module ownership—not just adjacency.

  • Recent, relevant OMS delivery: meaningful work within the last 24 to 36 months to ensure currency with modern practices.

  • Product Owner experience: 6–7+ years as a PO (or equivalent) in Agile/SAFe environments with mastery of PI readiness, backlog hygiene, DoR/DoD, and dependency/risk management.

  • Product craft excellence: high‑quality user stories, workflows/journey maps, and acceptance criteria; strong outcome orientation and traceability.

  • Retail/eCommerce & fulfillment background with omnichannel journeys (Pickup, Delivery, Ship‑to‑Home, Returns) and technical fluency (APIs, event/messaging, integration patterns, systems architecture).

These will help you stand out

  • Proven track record modernizing legacy OMS to microservices , including data migration and event‑driven design.

  • Experience operating with limited SME availability , leading proactive discoveries and applying industry OMS best practices .

  • Exposure to financial workflows (refunds, adjustments/markdowns/discount rules) and fraud/exception handling patterns.

  • Demonstrated use of delivery + product metrics (e.g., lead/cycle time, flow efficiency, defect escape rate, business KPIs) to inspect and adapt within PIs.

  • Success leading distributed teams (onshore/offshore) and collaboration with RTEs, architects, and peer POs; relevant certifications (e.g., SAFe POPM , PSPO ).

We’re excited to meet people who share our mission and can make an impact in various ways. Don’t hesitate to apply—even if you meet only the minimum requirements. Consider your transferable experiences and unique skills that can bring new value to this role.
