Job Summary:
The Quality Supervisor leads plant quality operations with primary responsibility for the Metrology Laboratory and dimensional inspection activities. This role ensures accurate and timely dimensional validation of fabricated and welded assemblies while maintaining oversight of incoming, in-process, and final inspection functions.
The Quality Supervisor serves as the plant’s subject matter expert for dimensional compliance and provides formal leadership to a team of approximately 9–11 Quality Technicians, Inspectors, and Metrology personnel.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role within a defense manufacturing environment.
Essential Functions:
Metrology Leadership (Primary Responsibility)
Supervise daily operations of the Metrology Laboratory
Program, validate, and review CMM inspection routines
Interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T requirements
Ensure dimensional verification aligns with customer and contractual requirements
Oversee calibration program for measurement equipment
Establish and maintain laboratory procedures and dimensional standards
Monitor lab KPIs including turnaround time, repeatability, and calibration compliance
Support root cause investigations involving dimensional nonconformance
Collaborate with Engineering on tolerance stack-up concerns and print clarifications
Inspection Operations Oversight
Supervise incoming, in-process, and final inspection activities
Ensure inspection execution per control plans and documented standards
Ensure immediate containment and segregation of nonconforming material
Support MRB activities and disposition tracking
Drive first pass yield and defect reduction initiatives
Ensure data accuracy within ERP and quality reporting system
Quality Systems & Compliance
Ensure compliance to ISO 9001 and customer requirements
Participate in internal and external audits
Maintain inspection and dimensional documentation integrity
Ensure adherence to calibration and measurement system requirements
Drive corrective action processes related to dimensional escapes
Continuous Improvement
Lead structured problem-solving (8D, 5-Why, Root Cause Analysis)
Analyze scrap and dimensional trends
Improve inspection efficiency and lab throughput
Identify opportunities for automation and measurement optimization
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Provide direct supervision to Quality Technicians, Inspectors, and Metrology personnel
Assign and prioritize daily work in alignment with production schedule and business needs
Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development
Administer corrective action and disciplinary measures in accordance with company policy
Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring decisions
Identify training needs and drive cross-training between laboratory and floor inspection functions
Provide technical mentoring to ensure continued development of metrology and inspection capabilities
Foster a culture of accountability, technical rigor, and continuous improvement
Minimum Qualifications:
Required Experience
Minimum 7 years of experience in manufacturing quality or metrology
Minimum 3 years of hands-on CMM operation and/or programming experience
Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment
Strong proficiency in GD&T interpretation and dimensional inspection
Experience with fabricated and welded assemblies
Experience working within ISO 9001 or equivalent quality management system
Preferred Experience
Experience in defense or heavy manufacturing
Experience with PLEX ERP or similar system
ASQ certification (CQI, CQA, CQE)
Experience with Zeiss, Hexagon, or similar CMM platforms
Lean or Six Sigma training
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required
Background Prerequisites:
