Summary:

  • The management of antineoplastic therapy is complex, high-risk and has the potential to be financially toxic. Oncology Clinical PharmacySpecialists will ensure that medication selection and use is optimized levels of safety, efficacy and cost-effectiveness are obtained for patientsundergoing antineoplastic therapy. Additionally, Oncology Clinical Pharmacy Specialists will ensure that antineoplastic mediations that arehazardous in nature are handled appropriately to reduce the risks of inadvertent exposures and contamination of other healthcare workers,patients and work environment respectively.

Responsibilities:

  • Prospectively review and monitor antineoplastic regimen selection for safety, appropriateness and cost-effectiveness.

  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of antineoplastic medications in a clean room environment.

  • Perform patient education as requested or needed.

  • Oversee preparation and dispensation of investigational medications.

  • Oversee and facilitate preparation and dispensation of cellular immunotherapies for inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Conduct medication use evaluations, summarize findings and make recommendations to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

  • Collaborate with nurses, physicians, physician extenders as well as administrative staff for the purposes of optimizing care.

  • Participates with pharmacist training and education.

  • Evaluate and conduct literature searches for the purposes of answering patient and healthcare professionals medication related questions.

  • Provide education to other healthcare professionals and patients regarding antineoplastic therapies.

  • Attend or lead multidisciplinary meetings as assigned or required.

  • Complete regulatory and institutional competencies as assigned.

  • Assist in writing evidence-based medication-use policies, treatment protocols and procedures for safe and optimal medication use.
