The Director, Supplemental Health Underwriting will join a rapidly growing $330M line of business within The Hartford’s Group Benefits organization. This highly visible leadership role is accountable for the overall underwriting strategy, performance, risk management, and profitability of the Supplemental Health product portfolio.
In this role, you will lead a team of approximately 17 underwriters, including one direct people leader, and serve as a key thought partner in shaping underwriting strategy, product design, pricing alignment, and portfolio optimization.
This leader will drive data‑informed decision‑making, continuously evaluate market trends and competitive dynamics, and implement underwriting best practices that balance growth and profitability. You will also be responsible for developing underwriting talent, fostering a culture of accountability and inclusion, and strengthening underwriting governance and controls as the business scales.
This position reports to the Vice President of Underwriting and plays a critical role in advancing supplemental health strategy and long‑term business outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide strategic and operational leadership for all Supplemental Health underwriting activities, including pre‑ and post‑sale underwriting, renewals, policy issuance, and policy changes
Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing underwriting organization; foster a strong culture of accountability, engagement, and technical expertise
Establish and monitor key performance metrics; deliver insights and analysis to ensure profitability, growth, and portfolio health
Partner in the development of budget, staffing, and compensation plans, while contributing to the broader strategic direction of the product line
Ensure a high standard of service that supports profitable growth and long‑term customer retention
Collaborate with Sales and Marketing to support product positioning, market competitiveness, and growth initiatives
Evaluate market and competitive trends; recommend and implement changes to underwriting guidelines, pricing, or product features as needed
Partner cross‑functionally with Product, Actuarial, Sales, and Operations to set and execute the Supplemental Health strategy
Drive results across new business pricing, in‑force book management, and enterprise partnership objectives
Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years of total business experience, with at least 5 years in supplemental health underwriting is required
Deep expertise in Supplemental Health products, including Accident, Hospital Indemnity, and Critical Illness
3+ years of successful people leadership experience; commitment to building strong teams and culture required
Strong business acumen, sound judgment, and the ability to operate both independently and collaboratively
Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking skills, with experience setting direction and driving execution
Proven ability to build strong relationships and influence across matrixed organizations
Highly organized with a track record of driving initiatives to completion in fast‑paced, complex environments
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or relevant professional designation preferred
Proficiency in MS Office Suite required; experience with Tableau a plus
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work schedule, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$128,000 - $192,000
