Step into a highly specialized role where science, engineering, and public health intersect to protect communities across Louisiana. This position offers the opportunity to independently apply advanced engineering expertise and multidisciplinary knowledge—including microbiology, epidemiology, chemistry, and computer science—to regulate water and wastewater systems and ensure compliance with state and federal standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE:

This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Analyzes and implements public health engineering activities related to public water supplies, wastewater facilities, and other environmental systems to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Conducts surveys, inspections, and technical evaluations of water and wastewater facilities to protect public health and ensure adherence to the State Sanitary Code, Louisiana Revised Statutes, and federal environmental laws.

  • Investigates public complaints and operational deficiencies, performs enforcement surveys, identifies violations, and develops recommendations for corrective actions and formal compliance orders.

  • Reviews and approves complex engineering plans and specifications for proposed or modified water and wastewater facilities, ensuring regulatory compliance and safeguarding public health and financial integrity.

  • Prepares detailed technical reports, enforcement documentation, and formal correspondence to public officials, system owners, consulting engineers, and other stakeholders regarding findings and required corrective measures.

  • Serves as a local technical authority in public health engineering by providing expert guidance and functional supervision to engineers, architects, operators, sanitarians, and public officials on regulatory interpretation and system improvements.

  • Participates in and supports special studies and environmental investigations, including pollution source identification and river/stream surveys, while maintaining accurate engineering data and environmental records affecting community health.

Compensation: For the Engineer Intern 1 – Engineer 5, these positions have a Special Entrance Rate (SER) starting salary of:

Engineer Intern 1 - $26.44 hourly / $2,115.20 bi-weekly Engineer Intern 2 - $28.29 hourly / $2,263.20 bi-weekly Engineer 3 – $33.39 hourly / $2,671.20 bi-weekly Engineer 4 - $36.90 hourly / $2,952.00 bi-weekly Engineer 5 - $39.48 hourly / $3,158.40 bi-weekly
