Actalent Manufacturing Engineer in Lafayette, Indiana

Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer III applies engineering theory and principles to optimize industrial layouts and manufacturing production processes. This role focuses on improving efficiency, ensuring product quality and reliability, and supporting production teams through data-driven analysis, clear documentation, and practical solutions on the shop floor.

Responsibilities

  • Study time, motion, methods, and operating speeds involved in maintenance, production, and other operations to establish standard production rates and improve overall efficiency.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, schematic diagrams, and formulas, and collaborate with engineering and leadership teams to determine appropriate quality and reliability standards.

  • Review worker logs, product processing sheets, and specification sheets to verify that all records comply with established quality assurance specifications.

  • Assist in planning work assignments based on worker performance, machine capacity, production schedules, and anticipated delays to support smooth and efficient operations.

  • Prepare charts, graphs, and diagrams that clearly illustrate workflow, routing, floor layouts, material handling, and machine utilization for use in planning and continuous improvement.

  • Observe workers using equipment to confirm that machines and tools are operated and maintained in accordance with quality assurance standards and safety expectations.

  • Observe workers operating equipment or performing tasks and use timing devices to determine time requirements and fatigue rates for various operations.

  • Evaluate production and quality data, compare results to existing standards, and write clear reports that validate performance or identify deviations requiring corrective action.

  • Apply manufacturing engineering knowledge on the shop floor to support process improvements, troubleshoot issues, and enhance manufacturing methods and layouts.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement engineering changes and ensure that documentation, drawings, and standards remain accurate and up to date.

Essential Skills

  • Strong creativity combined with analytical and problem-solving skills to improve manufacturing processes and layouts.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to create sketches and engineering drawings and perform common engineering computations.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.

  • Previous experience using computer applications and software related to engineering, including Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel and SharePoint, to analyze data and maintain documentation.

  • Ability to work effectively as a team player while maintaining strong attention to detail.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

  • Approximately 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering or a closely related manufacturing role.

  • Solid understanding of a shop environment, manufacturing processes, and preferably production machinery.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software is preferred but not required.

  • Experience creating and maintaining engineering-related documentation and reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with production, maintenance, and engineering teams in a manufacturing setting.

  • Comfort working with data, charts, and diagrams to support decision-making and process improvements.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across functions.

Work Environment

This is an onsite role based in a manufacturing facility in Lafayette. The Manufacturing Engineer will spend the majority of their time on the shop floor, closely observing production processes, equipment usage, and workflow, with some time spent in an office setting for analysis, reporting, and documentation. The position follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday. The environment is hands-on and fast-paced, with regular interaction with production personnel, machinery, and standard office technologies such as Microsoft Office and CAD tools.

This is a Contract position based out of Lafayette, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $40.00/hr.
