Job Description
Iñupiaq speakers in this role will support and guide the Iñupiaq language learning of immersion teachers and children in Northwest Arctic Borough School District immersion classrooms in a positive and loving way. Speakers in this position will be employed and supervised by Aqqaluk Trust but their work location will be at the school. There is currently one position available at Ambler School, one position at Shungnak School, and one position at JNES in Kotzebue. If willing, the Iñupiaq speaker may provide other support to Aqqaluk Trust language programs. Typical schedule will be 1 - 2 hours per day, 5 days per week but can be adjusted as necessary.
Responsibilities
Speak only Iñupiaq in the immersion classroom (no English).
Support the Iñupiaq language learning of the immersion classroom teacher and children in the immersion program
Support the immersion teacher to guide the behavior of children in the immersion classroom in loving, supportive ways.
Support other Iñupiaq language needs at Aqqaluk Trust if willing
Qualifications
Ability to communicate clearly and accurately in the Iñupiaq language, in full sentences (fluency is preferred but not required)
Ability to be in a classroom for multiple hours while speaking no English
Ability to sit, stand, and move about with limited assistance or no assistance
Experience working with children in classroom settings strongly preferred
Able to pass a school district background check to work with children
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather:Environmentally controlled, requires most work to be done inside. May occasionally be asked to work outdoors on an as-willing basis.
Noise level:Quiet to Moderate
Environment:School environment with significant interaction with young students. At times an office environment. The pace of the work environment is moderate.
Travel:No travel expected
Physical requirements:Able to sit, stand, and walk with limited or no assistance. Ability to use one or both hands and arms. Physically comfortable being around young children.
