Burns & McDonnell Technology & Innovation Consultant - Corporate Innovation (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

The Technology & Innovation Consultant will be responsible for identifying, developing, and successful implementing AI agents across Burns & McDonnell existing and emerging businesses, including Design, Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Program Management, Consulting, Development, and Infrastructure Operations.

Reporting to the Innovation Director within the Corporate Innovation (INO) organization, this role serves as the accountable lead for delivering and measuring the impact of AI implementations on projects while adhering to budget constraints, risk factors, and client needs.

The Technology & Innovation Consultant partners closely with:

  • Innovation Directors and business leaders embedded across Global Practices and Regional Offices to scope and prioritize high-value AI opportunities and rapidly develop software prototypes that demonstrate value.

  • Internal and external teams of software engineers to develop and deploy production-ready agentic solutions for the identified opportunities.

  • Corporate Business Enablement (IT, Innovation, Technical Solutions, Transformation) to align implementations with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, and vendor engagement strategies.

  • Corporate functions (Finance, HR, Legal, Risk Management, Supply Chain/Procurement, Marketing/BD, and others) to ensure governance compliance, risk mitigation, and alignment with corporate strategy.

This role owns the end-to-end success of each agentic deployment—from opportunity framing and business case development through software development and implementation, change adoption, performance measurement, and value realization—ensuring measurable impact of how Burns & McDonnell delivers projects. 

The main functions are of this role:

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of AI implementations across design, engineering, EPC, and program management projects.

  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize high-impact use cases on Projects in partnership with Global Practice and Regional Office leadership.

  • Rapidly develop zero-to-one software prototypes that demonstrate value.

  • Serve as the accountable project leader for AI solution delivery, including scope definition, schedule, budget, risk, and stakeholder management.

  • Coordinate cross-functional technical teams including corporate functions, business units, and external partners as needed.

  • Ensure compliance with enterprise data governance, cybersecurity standards, AI strategy, and risk management protocols.

  • Partner with Legal and Risk to evaluate contractual implications, intellectual property considerations, and client-facing risk exposure.

  • Establish KPIs to measure outcomes - operational efficiency, quality improvement, cost reduction, schedule compression, and revenue enhancement.

  • Monitor performance and adoption of deployed agents; lead continuous improvement and scaling strategies.

  • Support client-facing teams in articulating the value proposition and new sales models for services with embedded agents.

  • Facilitate executive-level updates and decision forums.

  • Drive change management efforts including stakeholder alignment, training coordination, and adoption tracking.

  • Ensure alignment with corporate transformation priorities and enterprise systems.

  • Promote a culture of responsible AI use, innovation, and continuous learning.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced team members contributing to innovation initiatives.

  • Comply with all company policies, standards, and safety requirements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering or related degree from an accredited program and 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in the consulting industry required. Or,

  • Associate Degree and 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in the consulting industry required. Or,

  • High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of relevant experience, preferably in the consulting industry required.

  • Strong knowledge and proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures for project and program management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent presentations skill with internal and external audiences of various sizes.

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, CAD platforms, GIS, analysis programs, and data acquisition platforms.

  • Strong knowledge in computer logic and data analytics preferred.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability of advanced learning of new concepts and applying knowledge to deliverables.

  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
