Job Description

The Production Technician assembles small electronic and mechanical components using hand tools, following schematic and technical drawings as well as detailed work instructions. This role focuses on cable harness and fiber optic assembly, soldering, and precise measurement verification in a clean, climate-controlled production environment. The technician works closely with a small team to ensure that all parts meet quality and dimensional requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble small parts and components using hand tools in accordance with schematic and technical drawings, work instructions, and established procedures.

  • Build and assemble cable harnesses and fiber optic assemblies, ensuring accurate routing, termination, and labeling.

  • Perform soldering tasks on electronic components and connections, applying proper techniques and industry standards.

  • Use small screwdrivers and other hand tools to fasten small bolts and hardware to assemblies.

  • Interpret and read electrical and mechanical drawings to understand part requirements and assembly steps.

  • Verify part dimensions and measurements against drawing requirements using calipers, tape measures, pin gauges, go/no-go gauges, and other measurement devices.

  • Operate and use tools and equipment such as wire strippers, crimpers, solder stations, heat guns, VOM (volt-ohm meters), cable testers, pull testers, and tape measures.

  • Check and validate part compliance using appropriate gauges and test equipment to ensure quality standards are met.

  • Perform basic computer data entry to record production information, test results, and other relevant data.

  • Follow geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices when verifying mechanical features and dimensions.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle components carefully to prevent damage.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively within a production team environment to meet schedules and production goals.

  • Follow all safety guidelines, work instructions, and quality procedures while handling tools, equipment, and materials.

Essential Skills

  • Experience assembling small parts using hand tools in a production or similar environment.

  • Hands-on experience with cable harness assembly.

  • Experience reading and interpreting drawings and work instructions proficiently.

  • At least 6 months of experience with tools and soldering.

  • Strong attention to detail, supported by references or work history.

  • Basic computer skills and general computer data entry knowledge.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical and mechanical drawings.

  • Ability to verify measurements and part compliance using calipers, tape measures, pin gauges, and go/no-go gauges.

  • General knowledge of common mechanical techniques, including geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices.

  • Ability to work effectively within a production team environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with electronics assembly.

  • Experience with fiber optics and fiber optic cable assembly.

  • Proficiency using wire strippers, crimpers, solder stations, heat guns, VOM, cable testers, pull testers, tape measures, and other common hand tools.

  • Comfort working from schematic and technical drawings and translating them into accurate assemblies.

  • Ability to document work and test results accurately in basic computer systems.

Work Environment

The role is based in a small business setting of about 20 people, located in a repurposed former ice skating rink that has been converted into a production facility. The workspace is clean and climate controlled, providing a comfortable environment throughout the year. Team members use a variety of production tools and test equipment, including wire strippers, crimpers, solder stations, heat guns, VOMs, cable testers, pull testers, calipers, tape measures, pin gauges, and go/no-go gauges. The dress code is casual, and jeans are acceptable. Employees performing soldering work wear ESD smocks to protect sensitive electronic components. The environment emphasizes teamwork, precision, and adherence to safety and quality procedures.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Johnstown, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $20.00/hr.
