This part-time Phlebotomist role in Jersey City focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while ensuring accurate labeling, processing, and storage. You will support patient care by explaining procedures clearly and courteously, maintaining specimen integrity, and following established laboratory protocols and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to ensure comfort and understanding.
Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles, including for patients who are considered hard sticks.
Review and fully understand all physician orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes, ensuring complete and accurate correlation.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the original script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, following specific procedures for each test.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards during specimen collection and processing.
Participate in annual department training sessions to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and best practices.
Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to keep equipment and work areas clean and functional.
Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records to support proper documentation and follow-up.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomist experience.
Proficiency in blood draws and venipuncture techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Demonstrated experience working with hard stick patients.
Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures.
Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes.
Ability to accurately check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure error-free processing.
Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
Effective verbal communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients and answer telephone inquiries.
Capability to read and relay laboratory results as needed.
High school diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Preferred experience working in an OBGYN setting.
Experience measuring blood pressure in a clinical environment.
Familiarity with using a centrifuge and handling various specimen types.
Comfort working in smaller in-office doctor settings or patient service centers to gain exposure to different clinical environments.
Commitment to ongoing learning through annual department trainings.
Work Environment
This is a part-time role with Saturday hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will work in a clinical setting such as a small in-office doctor’s practice or a patient service center, handling blood and other specimens and using standard laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges. The environment follows strict safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. You will interact regularly with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel in a professional, patient-focused atmosphere that emphasizes accuracy, courtesy, and high-quality diagnostic support.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jersey City, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
