The Head of Business Unit Controls plays a pivotal role in driving the risk management and compliance efforts within our organization. This position leads a team dedicated to assessing, monitoring, and mitigating risks, conducting compliance assessments, and identifying emerging risks within the business unit.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leads the development and execution of Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSA) processes with the business unit. Collaborates with business unit leaders to identify, assess, and document risks and controls. Analyzes RCSA results to prioritize and recommend risk mitigation strategies.

  • Conducts compliance assessments in conjunction with 2nd Line to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal policies as well as helping 1st line develop establish appropriate controls ensuring compliance. Works closely with the compliance team to address any compliance gaps or deficiencies.

  • Monitors industry trends, regulatory changes, and external factors to proactively identify emerging risks. Engages with cross-functional teams to assess the potential impact of emerging risks on the business units. Develops risk mitigation plans to address emerging risks, as appropriate.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to a team of risk management professionals. Fosters a culture of risk awareness and control consciousness within the team and the business unit. Conducts performance evaluations, mentor team members, and support their professional development.

  • Identifies opportunities for process enhancements and improvements in risk management and compliance functions. Develops and implements best practices to enhance the effectiveness of risk management processes.

Educational Requirements

  • University (Degree) Preferred

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in risk management, internal controls, compliance, or audit within a regulated banking or financial services corporate environment, including people leadership.

  • Demonstrated expertise in Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSA), control design, risk identification, assessment, and mitigation within a first-line risk framework.

  • Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements, internal control standards, and governance practices, with proven ability to partner effectively with second-line risk and compliance functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading Business Unit Controls or Operational Risk functions within a large, complex organization, preferably in financial services.

  • Relevant professional certifications such as CRMP, CRCM, CIA, CISA, or similar credentials demonstrating advanced risk and control expertise.

Pay Range $212,500 - $287,500
