Ithaca College INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN & EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST in Ithaca, New York

Position Summary

The Instructional Design & Educational Technology Specialist provides support for faculty with the integration of technology into teaching and learning and identifies appropriate tools to support instruction. Provides consultation in pedagogy, instructional design, and course development related to courses, modules, and whole curriculum activities for traditional, online, and hybrid course projects. Working collaboratively with campus partners, the Specialist advances digital and AI literacy, excellence in teaching with supported technology tools, and evidence-informed instructional technology practice within a diverse academic community.

Supervision

This position reports to the Director of Instructional Design & Educational Technology and may supervise student employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consult with faculty to share best practices and introduce methods where learning technology can assist in achieving learning outcomes through active learning, inclusive teaching practices, classroom management, and assessment of student learning. This includes supporting faculty throughout the course cycle with the adoption and use of learning technologies according to quality standards. Partner with faculty to design, revise, and enhance courses using evidence-based instructional design principles.

  • Contribute expertise to the design and facilitation of sustained faculty development initiatives, including workshops, institutes, learning communities, and cohort-based programs.

  • Support faculty in the pedagogically grounded use of educational technologies, including learning management systems and emerging tools. Partner with faculty to explore AI-enabled tools and practices in ways that support learning goals, academic integrity, and ethical use. Advance faculty digital literacy by integrating technology conversations into broader teaching and learning discussions.

  • Design, develop, and deliver learning solutions throughout the spectrum of in-person to online course modalities; implement a variety of educational technologies in the delivery of meaningful learning experiences.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to support teaching and learning initiatives and faculty development priorities, through participation in cross-campus projects, committees, and working groups related to teaching, learning, and academic innovation; and contribute pedagogical perspectives to conversations about learning spaces, classroom technologies, and instructional resources.

  • Collaborate with faculty to design learning experiences that reflect inclusive, equitable, and accessible teaching practices that apply Universal Design for Learning principles and digital accessibility standards in faculty consultations and instructional design support; contribute to a campus culture that values inclusive pedagogy and student-centered learning.

  • Remain current with trends, research, and best practices in emerging technologies including AI, e-learning, higher education, learning theory, and instructional design theory.

  • Develop and demonstrate multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive diverse and respectful college community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff faculty students and visitors to the college. Promote a flexible, collaborative, and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

  • Participate in and lead IT projects as assigned. Coordinate planning, research and implementation efforts with IT staff and the user community. Use established IT project management protocols. Develop project plans and documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, faculty development, educational development, learning sciences, or a related field; or a bachelor’s degree with significant, progressive professional experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading or substantially contributing to faculty development initiatives in higher education.

  • Strong grounding in learning theory, instructional design principles, and evidence-based teaching practices.

  • Experience consulting with faculty or instructors as peers on pedagogy, course design, assessment, and instructional improvement.

  • Experience working with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas or similar platforms).

  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a faculty-centered, shared-governance environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in a higher education academic environment.

  • Experience designing and facilitating faculty learning communities, institutes, or longitudinal professional development programs.

  • Experience supporting accessible course design aligned with ADA, Section 508, and WCAG standards.

  • Experience applying Universal Design for Learning principles in faculty development or instructional design work.

  • Experience supporting faculty experimentation with emerging technologies, including AI.

  • Canvas certification or equivalent professional credential.

Special Note

This role requires a primarily in-person presence (approximately 80%) at the Ithaca College campus in Ithaca, NY to support faculty engagement, collaboration, and professional learning activities.

This position is 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Range:

$65,000-$70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
