Job Description
The Phlebotomist II performs high-volume blood and specimen collection across pediatric to geriatric patient populations in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. This role focuses on accurate venipuncture, specimen processing, and data entry while providing courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff. The position also supports additional testing services such as drug screenings and paternity testing, and requires strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and specimen handling protocols.
Responsibilities
Perform 25–30 blood draws per shift using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
Explain venipuncture, blood draws, and other specimen collection procedures (including urine and fecal specimens) clearly and courteously to patients.
Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes, ensuring 100% accuracy against the physician’s orders or scripts.
Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, labeling accurately, and following required temperature and handling procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and documentation tools.
Understand and fully interpret all physician orders related to laboratory testing.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and infection control procedures.
Attend and complete required annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
Support additional testing services, including drug screenings and paternity testing, following all applicable protocols.
Assist with front-end tasks such as checking patients out and providing excellent customer service throughout the visit.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 2–3 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
Valid phlebotomy certification from the state of Illinois.
Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patients.
High school diploma or GED.
2–4 years of overall experience in phlebotomy or a closely related clinical role.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and staff.
Ability to follow detailed protocols for specimen collection, labeling, centrifugation, storage, and transport.
Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in both outpatient patient service centers and hospital or fast-paced clinical environments.
Comfort with performing additional testing services such as drug screenings and paternity testing.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy when labeling specimens and matching requisitions to tubes.
Effective verbal communication skills for explaining procedures and reading laboratory results over the phone when appropriate.
Ability to manage a steady workflow and prioritize tasks during high-volume periods.
Commitment to ongoing learning, including participation in annual department trainings.
Professional, courteous demeanor with a focus on patient comfort and satisfaction.
Eligibility for mileage reimbursement when travel between locations is required, in accordance with company policy.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical setting in Waukegan, IL, with initial orientation held at a nearby patient service center in Gurnee, IL. The work environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with frequent interaction with individuals of all ages from pediatric to geriatric. The role involves regular use of standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and communication. The environment emphasizes adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, and requires professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
