TEKsystems Systems Administrator in Irving, Texas

IMPORTANT: THERE ARE TWO OPENINGS FOR THIS POSITION. (1) traditional Monday - Friday shift, begins anywhere from 8am - 10am. (2) Sunday - Thursday, 1:00pm - 9:30pm

Here is the relevant feedback that will help your search. They need someone who can hit the ground running, they will not have the time to train someone. They prefer someone with enterprise experience who is used to a faster pace and higher demand. They need actual systems admin experience (has installed a server, has been a point of escalation for the team). They need to be prepared to speak to everything on their resume.

The System Admin / "Data Center Technician II"'s main responsibility is to perform intake for various data center work orders, review requirements, discern the appropriate action steps, and implement the necessary infrastructure upgrades using industry expertise. This role keeps current with industry standards, growth, and changes in technology. This is a 24/7, 100% on campus position and requires flexibility and willingness to cover shifts of any hour with short notice. Infrequent travel to remote facilities may be required. Additionally, this position may be scheduled to work during off-hours that may fall outside of normal business hours or during the weekend, specifically Mon-Fri, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and periodically assigned after-hour support and availability to receive pages 24-7.

As our ideal candidate, you will have three (3) years of job-related experience; data center related experience is a plus. We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills, understand data center operations, enjoys working in a team and is a great fit within our group.

JOB DUTIES

• Monitors and responds to failures including those related to power, hardware, network, and facilities.

• Analyzes system events/alerts and diagnoses potential root causes.

• Utilize elevated access and sound judgement during remediation processes.

• Responds to system hardware issues by applying diagnostics, troubleshooting, testing, and reimplementation.

• Carries out shipping/receiving duties to maintain accurate inventory control and asset tracking.

• Conducts issue tracking and responds to incidents in a timely manner.

• Runs cable as specified in work orders, often including Fiber and Ethernet.

• Assists with project initiatives and collaborates with other technicians and engineers.

• Assists with the auditing and verification of data center equipment and operations.

• Interacts with clients via written communication and phone and showcases high quality customer service.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Junior-level systems admin role

Strong hardware exposure:

Rack and stack

Server builds

Cabling (but not cable-only roles)

More reactive and ticket-driven

Primarily hardware-focused

2–3 years of experience ideal

Primarily Windows (80%), some Linux

Hardware responsibilities:

Racking and stacking

Server installs

Not looking for cable-only technicians

Work breakdown:

40–50% hardware installs

25% projects and operational support

Remainder focused on collaboration and soft skills

Team model:

Each team member owns specific tools/applications (their “babies”)

Environment scale:

3,000 physical servers

400–500 virtual servers

13,000 sq. ft. data center

Work is 100% onsite (5 days/week)

Primary location: Las Colinas (QTS data center – dedicated suite)

Some travel to:

DR site (Fort Worth)

Data centers on campus (Dallas)

Skill diversity is valued:

Scripting (PowerShell preferred but not required)

Linux-heavy backgrounds welcome

MSP backgrounds highly valued

Explicitly not looking for cabling-only profile

• Data Center team acts as the intersection between business and IT

• Requires strong “glue” personalities who can communicate across groups

• Example use case: onboarding an application requiring 20 servers

• Top performers often come from MSP backgrounds due to broad exposure and people skills

• Uses an older open-source tool called Zion

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irving, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $48.00/hr.
