Shimmick Business Intelligence & Data Solutions Architect in Irvine, California

Overview

Shimmick is seeking a highly experienced and visionary Business Intelligence & Data Solutions Architect to lead the design, governance, and evolution of the company’s enterprise data and application ecosystem. This role combines strategic architecture leadership, hands-on data engineering, and direct oversight of BI and application development resources to enable reliable, scalable, and actionable analytics across the organization.

This role will work closely with leadership, IT, and business leaders to architect and maintain the SQL Server and data lake environments, translate raw data into meaningful structures, and drive the development of custom applications and reporting tools that support estimating, opportunity evaluation, analytics, and long‑term historical data management.

Responsibilities

Data Platform & Environment Ownership

  • Lead the design, configuration, and governance of the SQL Server environment, including database structure, performance, security, and access.

  • Partner w/ IT staff to provision and maintain SQL Server instances and related infrastructure.

  • Establish and oversee robust backup, recovery, and disaster‑recovery strategies to ensure data availability and integrity.

  • Collaborate with IT to define standards for patching, upgrades, and environment monitoring.

Data Quality, Cleansing & Translation

  • Translate data from the data lake and other raw sources into well‑modeled, usable SQL schemas optimized for applications and reporting.

  • Ensure data structures support consistent, trusted metrics and align with business terminology and requirements.

  • Document data definitions, lineage, and transformation logic to build and maintain trust in enterprise data.

Cyclical Data Updates & Maintenance

  • Design and maintain cyclical data update processes, including job scheduling, orchestration, and performance tuning of refresh and load routines.

  • Monitor data refresh health, troubleshoot failures, and continuously improve reliability and performance of data pipelines.

  • Own ongoing maintenance of enterprise data assets, including schema evolution, refactoring, and technical debt remediation.

  • Define standards and patterns for integrations between source systems, the data lake, and SQL/reporting environments.

Custom Application Architecture & Development

  • Partner with estimating, operations, and business development teams to design, architect, and oversee custom applications that improve efficiency.

  • Provide architectural guidance and hands‑on support for modern web and low‑code applications (e.g., SQL‑backed web apps, Power Apps, and related services).

  • Ensure applications are built on scalable, secure, and well‑documented data models that support both operational workflows and analytic needs.

  • Promote reusability and standardization of components, integrations, and UI/UX patterns across applications.

Leadership, Team Management & Governance

  • Manage and mentor data analysts, BI developers, and application developers, providing technical direction, code review, and coaching.

  • Set and enforce best practices for data modeling, development, testing, deployment, and documentation within the BI and data solutions team.

  • Contribute to project intake and prioritization, helping determine which initiatives are pursued and in what sequence based on impact and capacity.

  • Play a central role in selecting and evaluating vendors, tools, and platforms related to data, BI, and automation, including participation in proof‑of‑concept efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in data architecture, enterprise application development, and BI/analytics, with substantial responsibility for SQL Server–based environments.

  • Demonstrated success designing relational and hierarchical data models that support multi‑user enterprise applications and complex reporting.

  • Expert‑level proficiency with SQL Server, including schema design, performance tuning, stored procedures, and integrations with upstream and downstream systems.

  • Proven experience with data cleansing, data conversions, and building reliable interfaces across ERP, CRM, HR, and operational systems.

  • Hands‑on experience designing or consuming data lakes and implementing pipelines that create curated, analytics‑ready SQL structures.

  • Strong background in custom application development (e.g., Django, .NET, Power Apps or similar), including integration with SQL Server and other enterprise platforms.

  • Advanced proficiency with modern BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), including dashboard design aligned with data visualization best practices.

  • Experience leading or heavily contributing to enterprise programs such as BI Centers of Excellence, automation programs (e.g., RPA), or data governance initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor technical staff, coordinate complex initiatives, and deliver high‑impact, cost‑saving solutions at scale.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to bridge technical and non‑technical stakeholders and build consensus around architecture and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in engineering, construction, infrastructure, or other project‑based industries with complex estimating, project controls, and operational reporting needs.

  • Familiarity with ERP and financial systems common to construction or professional services, and prior experience integrating these systems into reporting and custom applications.

  • Background leveraging robotic process automation (RPA) and workflow automation tools to streamline data‑intensive processes and reduce manual effort.

  • Training or certification in Lean / Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data/Analytics, or a related field; advanced degree a plus.

The salary range for this position is between $140,000 - $160,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
