Director of Operations - Ionia County Road Department Operations Director - Ionia County Road Department in Ionia, Michigan

Ionia County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Road Department Operations Director. The Operations Director provides leadership and strategic direction for the Road Department's operations, including road maintenance, construction, fleet services, traffic control, and emergency response. This role ensures the safe, cost-effective, and timely delivery of infrastructure services while maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

The ideal candidate should have extensive knowledge of Michigan Transportation Funding; a good understanding of local, state, and federal highway financing; must possess strong skills in dealing with the public, employees, government officials, and the business community.   Knowledge of road and bridge construction and maintenance is preferred.

The Operations Manager should demonstrate strong visionary leadership and will bring proven financial management expertise, with the ability to effectively plan, allocate, and manage resources in a fiscally responsible manner.  They will play a key role in strategic planning, ensuring the development and maintenance of safe, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure. Success in this role requires a collaborative mindset and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal staff, elected officials, local municipalities, contractors, and the public.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration, transportation planning or related field.
  • Prefer 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in administration related to public works and the operation of departments responsible for maintenance, planning, project management, construction, public finance and accounting, including Act 51, labor relations and public employee personnel administration, and grant writing.
  • Strong leadership, budgeting, and communication skills
