Job Title: Forklift Operator and Material Handler Job Description

A manufacturer in Indianapolis is searching for a Lead Operator on 1st shift who is comfortable working in a heavy industrial setting. This is a working lead position, where you will oversee forklift and material handlers while also performing forklift operating and general labor duties. The role involves moving raw metal materials and finished bales around the facility using a standard propane forklift with various attachments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead forklift and material handling personnel on shift.

  • Operate a sit-down forklift to move metal cubes and pallets safely around the facility.

  • Use attachments such as clamp truck, long fork, and tilting attachment for specific tasks.

  • Perform quality checks on products and facilitate truck loading.

  • Assist with general cleaning or labor tasks as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Proven forklift operating experience.

  • Ability to facilitate truck loading and perform visual quality checks.

  • Leadership qualities and ability to oversee a team in a heavy industrial setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with RF scanner, order picking, and reach truck operations.

  • Capability to perform heavy lifting and stand-up forklift operations.

  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.

Work Environment

The facility is a metal sorting and packaging operation that remains cooler than typical metal manufacturing environments as it does not involve metal melting. It is not temperature controlled, typically being 10-15 degrees cooler than outside during the summer. The front half of the facility resembles a basic warehouse with sorting operations, while the back houses large baling machines for processing metal products.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
