Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on delivering high-quality specimen collection and processing while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting and training, and make recommendations to improve efficiency. The position involves working with a variety of patient populations in a fast-paced clinical environment and managing the full patient experience from check-in through specimen processing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws (venipuncture) using straight needles and butterfly needles in a clear, confident, and courteous manner.

  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.

  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear and courteous way to ensure understanding and comfort.

  • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy.

  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order.

  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes while following all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity during transport.

  • Package specimens for transport in accordance with established guidelines and protocols.

  • Update and verify patient information accurately in the system and perform data entry for orders and results.

  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and specimen handling.

  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to confirm accuracy before processing.

  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries.

  • Provide excellent customer service and manage the patient experience from start to finish, including check-in, blood draw, processing, and order entry.

  • Float to multiple patient service centers and outpatient locations in the Southern Indiana region as needed to support clinic operations.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws on geriatric patients, with the ability to perform venipuncture confidently and safely.

  • Hands-on experience with venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.

  • Strong phlebotomy skills, including specimen collection, handling, and storage.

  • Ability to collect, label, and manage patient specimens accurately according to established procedures.

  • Proficiency in specimen processing, including centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and preparing samples for transport.

  • Experience working in a laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or similar clinical environment handling biological samples.

  • Competence in data entry and order entry, including checking test requisitions and computer labels for accuracy.

  • Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and follow specific testing protocols.

  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations related to specimen handling and laboratory safety.

  • High school diploma or GED completion.

  • Excellent customer service skills and a professional, patient-focused approach.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience performing blood draws on pediatric patients is a plus.

  • Comfort working across multiple patient service centers and outpatient locations as needed.

  • Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic health record or laboratory information systems.

  • Experience in medical assisting or related clinical support roles is beneficial.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical setting while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills for explaining procedures and answering questions from patients and clinical staff.

  • Phlebotomy certification is not required but may be considered an asset.

Work Environment

  • This is a full-time, day-shift position, generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with slight variations depending on the specific clinic.

  • The home base for this role is a clinical facility in the Indianapolis area, with the possibility of floating to additional clinics in surrounding communities such as Carmel, Plainfield, Avon, Columbus, and Zionsville to support operational needs.

  • The work takes place in a clinical and laboratory setting, using equipment such as centrifuges and standard phlebotomy supplies for specimen collection and processing.

  • You will work closely with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel in a fast-paced environment that emphasizes accuracy, safety, and patient care.

  • Then traveling to other sites, mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable.

  • The dress code aligns with a professional clinical environment, typically requiring appropriate healthcare attire suitable for direct patient contact and laboratory work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
