Job Description
The Electrical Engineer or Electrical Designer will design and analyze building electrical systems for a wide range of projects, with a strong focus on healthcare and high-profile governmental facilities. This role requires advanced technical expertise in electrical building design, the ability to manage multiple projects at once, and strong proficiency with Revit, including the use of smart schedules. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to sustainable, innovative, and highly technical projects within a collaborative, multidisciplinary architecture and engineering environment.
Responsibilities
Design and develop building electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, telecommunications, security, fire alarm systems, and renewable energy solutions.
Prepare detailed construction documentation such as floor plans, one-line diagrams, equipment and panel schedules (including Revit smart schedules), and related design details.
Incorporate sustainable design strategies and renewable energy solutions into electrical system designs.
Support and contribute to LEED-certified projects by ensuring electrical designs align with sustainability standards and project goals.
Manage multiple projects concurrently while maintaining high quality, meeting deadlines, and adhering to budget requirements.
Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including MEP engineers, architects, structural and civil engineers, contractors, and clients to align electrical designs with overall project objectives.
Review designs for compliance with applicable codes and standards, including NFPA, NEC, IBC, ASHRAE 90.1, and relevant state and local regulations.
Perform engineering analyses such as load calculations, short-circuit and voltage drop checks, and support the development of electrical budgets and cost estimates.
Conduct on-site field surveys to collect existing conditions data and verify information necessary for accurate design and layout of electrical systems.
Review contractor cost estimates, bid packages, and construction submittals to verify conformance with design intent and project requirements.
Provide technical support during construction, addressing design-related questions, resolving issues, and assisting in successful project delivery.
Present electrical design concepts to clients and stakeholders, clearly communicating technical information and design rationale.
Incorporate client and stakeholder feedback into design revisions to enhance project outcomes and user satisfaction.
Collaborate with internal sustainability-focused teams to integrate energy-efficient and environmentally responsible electrical solutions into projects.
Actively participate in a collaborative office culture, including design charrettes, internal trainings, and knowledge-sharing sessions to support professional growth and project excellence.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 5+ years of electrical engineering experience specific to building design with a BSEE degree; or approximately 10+ years of directly relevant building electrical design experience without a BSEE.
Strong understanding of building electrical design, including low and medium voltage systems, power distribution, and lighting design.
Proficiency in Revit for electrical design, including creation and management of smart schedules and coordination within multidisciplinary models.
Ability to perform and interpret electrical load calculations and apply them effectively to system sizing and equipment selection.
Knowledge of conduit routing, conduit sizing, and overall electrical distribution layout within building projects.
Experience with electrical design for building types such as healthcare, higher education, multi-family, science and technology, and government facilities.
Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including NFPA, NEC, IBC, ASHRAE 90.1, and applicable state and local regulations.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting schedule, quality, and budget expectations.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, external partners, and clients.
Proficiency in general electrical engineering and design principles, including schematic design and system coordination.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is preferred for engineering-focused candidates; candidates without a degree may qualify with 10+ years of directly relevant electrical design experience.
EIT (Engineer in Training) or PE (Professional Engineer) license is preferred and supported for those pursuing licensure.
Experience with VA (Veterans Affairs) projects is a plus.
Experience working on LEED-certified or sustainability-focused projects is highly desirable.
Background in healthcare electrical design or other highly technical building types is advantageous.
Interest in professional development, including pursuing certifications and specialized training supported by the firm.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, open-office environment and contribute positively to a team-focused culture.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when preparing construction documents, reviewing submittals, and coordinating with project stakeholders.
Work Environment
The role is based in a modern, recently renovated downtown office that features an open-concept layout with a mix of open work areas, cubicles, and private offices with glass walls and doors. The environment is highly collaborative, with frequent interaction among architecture, engineering, and other design disciplines. The firm is a growing, approximately 50-person architecture and engineering practice known for sustainable design and a strong portfolio in healthcare, governmental, housing, federal, and education projects. The culture emphasizes community involvement and philanthropy, including civic projects in the local area and an annual service week. The team enjoys an open office environment that supports mentorship, professional development, and advancement, including growth toward PE licensure or deepening expertise as an electrical designer. The organization offers competitive insurance and benefits, a PTO plan that begins at 10 hours per month, annual Employee Day and Family Day events, and quarterly retreats that also serve as training opportunities. The firm invests in employee growth by providing company-paid trainings and sending employees to external certifications or specialized programs, and maintains an internal sustainability team focused on advancing sustainable design practices. The office building includes access to a parking garage and nearby street parking, as well as an on-site gym, with ongoing expansion of the office space. This is a first-shift position with a flexible start and end time within the general range of 7:00–9:00 AM to 4:00–6:00 PM, with the expectation that employees set consistent hours rather than changing them daily. After approximately 90 days, there is potential for a hybrid work arrangement. The dress code is business casual.
