*POSITION SUMMARY: *Under the direction of the Risk Manager, manages and oversees the planning, design, and development of an occupational safety program to provide a safe and healthy workplace for employees and to reduce work-related injuries and accidents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Responsible for developing and implementing Tribal occupational health and safety policy and standards or changes to existing standards and the enforcement of them.

2.     Works in coordination with Risk Manager and Department Directors in the design and implementation of safety programs and conducts analysis, problem solving, and corrective action plans when needed.

3.     Works with all departments to conduct fire drills and provide guidance on design and use of equipment, fire prevention, and safety programs.

4.     Monitors federal and state occupational health and safety regulations to determine which components are of value to the Tribe.

5.     Provides support and participates in various planning activities and Tribal events to assess and monitor the environment and procedures to ensure safety of attendees.

6.     Evaluates Tribal accident statistics and defines target goals for performance and monitors for achievement of goals; recommends long-range accident prevention and cost-control objectives designed to meet established goals.

7.     May conduct workplace accident investigations to determine cause and areas in need of improvement to prevent future occurrences; recommends and/or implements preventative measures.

8.     Drafts and provides a wide variety of up-to-date safety related notices, memorandums, guidelines, and maps through email distribution and hard copy postings.

9.     Stays informed on current safety related information, processes, and best practices and implements relevant and useful resource material procedures as required.

10.  Develops and implements processes, methods and tools designed to measure, evaluate, and monitor departmental safety training and compliance. 

11.  Oversees the design, preparation, analysis, and distribution of safety data and statistical reports concerning accidents, trends, and solutions to Tribal Department Directors and executive management.

12.  Participates in all safety inspections including those conducted by the property & casualty insurance carrier, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and worker's compensation carrier, assuring that all affected departments comply.

13.  Prepares and presents reports and information on safety statistics, trends, and related costs. Makes recommendations for current and future development.

14.  Conducts worksite inspections to identify hazardous and dangerous equipment and/or work environment factors that may expose employees or the public to risk or danger in the workplace.

15.  Represents the Tribe in the community on safety-related committees, organizations, and groups.

16.  Oversees review and approval process for department Accident Prevention Plans.

17.  Assists in preparation of the Risk Management budget.

18.  Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have an AA/AS in Business, Safety Management, or closely related field and 1 year of relevant work experience OR 3 years of experience in a safety compliance / safety administration field.

Must have experience with the development and implementation of safety programs and policies, including conducting investigations and assessments.

Must have computer experience including Microsoft Word, Excel, and database programs.

Must have general knowledge of budgets and accounting procedures.

Must have a valid Driver's License for state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy.

Must pass a thorough criminal history background check, including fingerprint check and pre-employment drug test.
