Southern Ute Tribe Early Childhood Teacher in Ignacio, Colorado
POSITION SUMMARY: This is a professional teaching position with the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy (SUIMA). An employee in this position uses the Montessori philosophy to provide Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy
students with a developmentally appropriate learning environment meeting the physical, social/emotional, cognitive, and cultural needs of the child. This position is responsible for communicating effectively with parents/guardians about their child's progress in each domain area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Represents the Tribe and school in a professional manner.
2. Serves as a mandatory reporter if child abuse or neglect is observed or suspected towards any child.
3. Supports the philosophy and goals of the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy.
4. Expands the child's ability to learn and grow in his/her environment by preparing a safe and healthy environment that is appropriate for children while supporting the educational and personal growth of the child within a Montessori classroom.
5. Provides appropriate stimulation by developing Montessori based materials and activities that promote gross motor, fine motor, language, Ute language and culture, social/emotional, and intellectual development of the child.
6. Respects the use and care of the materials and equipment which are organized to present an attractive, orderly, safe, and inviting classroom.
7. Follows through with educational & behavioral strategies developed by the SUIMA Child Study team, and/or San Juan BOCES, while integrating them into the child's daily routine.
8. Provides experiences that create an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement, fostering the development of a positive self-concept, supporting the child's individual strengths.
9. Assists children in developing the ability to effectively process feelings, work cooperatively with others, and work on skills necessary to cope with present and future circumstances.
10. Communicates with parents/guardians to encourage positive interactions between home and school and recognizes the integral role the parent/guardian plays in their child's overall educational success.
11. Conducts a minimum of two parent/teacher conferences per year for each assigned child.
12. Attends all SUIMA meetings, in-services, and trainings as required. Pursues on-going education for a total of 50 Professional Development hours every five (5) years.
13. Relates positively with co-guides, assistants, supervisors, co-workers, Tribal employees, children, families, and the public.
14. Shares the responsibility of all requirements regarding the education and care of the children with co-guide which includes maintaining daily attendance, meal records, anecdotal notes, and individual student records.
15. Gathers and maintains individual and classroom data for documentation, evaluation, planning, and individual assessment, including information for Individual Service Plans, as directed by the Special Education Specialist, Curriculum Coordinator or Principal.
16. Posts a daily classroom schedule, and maintains individual daily lesson plans for each child, and provides a monthly lesson plan for the Curriculum Coordinator and Principal.
17. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have an AA/AS in Early Childhood or Elementary Education (or related field) and 1 year of relevant experience OR 30 college credits in Education or related field and 2 years of work experience with infants/toddlers or preschool children and must o tain an AA in Education or related field within 3 years of hire.
Must be Montessori certified at the level of the teaching assignment or obtain certification within 2 years of hire.
Must have computer experience and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Must have and maintain a current Infant/child/adult CPR and First Aid certificate or obtain within 6 months of hire.
Must pass a thorough background check including Criminal History, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug test.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Montessori certified at level of position
AA in Early Childhood Education.
BA degree in Education, preferably in Early Childhood Education.
Possession of a valid driver's license for state of residency and insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy.
TERO preference.
