Primary Purpose:

Participate in the evaluation, determination of eligibility, planning, and implementation of special education programs.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to convey ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.

Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, education of special education students, human development, and learning theories.

Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Ability to organize and maintain accurate records.

Ability to operate a computer.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Receive student referrals and implement the assessment and evaluation process with state mandated timeframes.

2.Select and administer formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and Texas Education Agency (TEA) regulations.

  1. Collect and organize relevant assessment data from student's cumulative folder, classroom teacher(s), principal, support staff, parents, and outside resources.

  2. Conduct classroom observation and personal interviews.

  3. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students according to district procedures.

  4. Assist classroom teachers with implementation of IEP.

  5. Consult with teachers and relevant staff concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data.

  6. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enrich work with students.

  7. Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with staff.

  8. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with teachers and supervisors.

  9. Assist in the selection of assessment materials and equipment.

  10. Assist the principal and the Administrator of Special Education in the evaluation of the assessment program and overall special education needs of the assigned campuses.

  11. Provide staff development training in assigned campuses to assist staff with identification and understanding of students with learning disabilities and/or emotional, social, or behavioral disturbances.

  12. Compile and maintain all physical and computerized reports, records, and other miscellaneous documents.

  13. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and local board policy in the areas of assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.

  14. Comply with all procedures and regulations of the district, region, and campus.

  15. Prepare and/or coordinate eligibility reports needed to support the educational program.

  16. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.

  17. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments.

  18. Demonstrate progress in meeting student performance targets of the district.

  19. Demonstrate progress in meeting assigned action plans of the district or campus improvement plans.
