Senior Associate General Counsel
Position Overview
Huntington is seeking an experienced Senior Associate General Counsel to lead the legal team supporting its commercial lending businesses. This role will serve as a trusted advisor to business leaders across Syndicated & Leveraged Finance, Sponsor Finance, Corporate & Specialty Banking, and Middle Market Banking.
The successful candidate will bring deep transactional expertise, strong people leadership skills, and the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice. This role will play an important role in enabling the continued growth of the Commercial Bank.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, manage, and develop a team of attorneys supporting Syndicated & Leveraged Finance, Sponsor Finance, Corporate & Specialty Banking, and Middle Market Banking.
Provide strategic legal advice on complex commercial lending transactions, including leveraged finance, sponsor finance, and syndicated lending transactions.
Analyze and interpret legal, regulatory, and market developments affecting commercial lending and proactively advise leadership on emerging trends and risks.
Build strong, scalable legal processes to support commercial lending activity across the Commercial Bank.
Assist in development and management of Huntington’s program for management of external counsel relationships.
Collaborate closely with Risk, Credit, Operations, Technology and Compliance colleagues regarding operational and regulatory risk and control issues and the applicability of federal and state laws and regulations.
Advise the business with respect to new products and services.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups.
Work in partnership with other members of the Commercial Legal Team to establish best practices across all Huntington Commercial Bank businesses.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and JD required.
Licensed to practice law and in good standing in the state/jurisdiction in which the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction.
A minimum of 15 years of law firm and/or in-house legal department experience advising financial institutions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated expertise in leveraged finance, sponsor finance and syndicated lending transactions.
Experience designing and implementing scalable legal processes within a large, complex financial institution.
Familiarity with bank regulatory expectations applicable to commercial lending activities.
Ability to lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing legal team.
Strong judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
Excellent communication skills and the capacity to engage effectively with senior executives and business partners.
Proficient in handling a large number of issues and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
