MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Pharmacy Technician - Inpatient in Houston, Texas

Our Inpatient Pharmacy team delivers comprehensive and high-quality medication distribution services across the hospital. We manage all aspects of inpatient drug delivery - including unit dose dispensing, IV admixture preparation, and specialized systems for controlled substances and investigational drugs.

We leverage advanced automation and robotic dispensing technology to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety in every step of the process.

The ideal candidate will possess a High School Diploma and hold a current Pharmacy Technician Registration. In addition, candidates should have at least three (3) years of experience in an Inpatient pharmacy setting, including Pharmacy experience in training staff and experience in a leadership role.

*Working Hours: *This position will be an evening shift 3:00-11:30pm

The primary purpose of the Advanced Pharmacy Technician position is to maintain an area of expertise providing technical assistance and structure through training of the technical staff, conducting area audits, inventory management, providing input and implementing process improvements, and to assist with functions related to the dispensing, compounding, and delivery of medication and equipment from pharmacy.

1. Pharmacy Workflow and Employee Training / Competency

  • Participate in and support:

  • Medication preparation and distribution

  • Sterile and non-sterile compounding

  • Inventory management activities, as applicable

3. Project Management

  • Coordinate and prepare complex materials, including:

  • Tools utilizing Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint

  • Facilitate effective and professional communication across:

  • Interdepartmental teams

  • Interdisciplinary teams

  • To ensure timely decision-making and accurate information sharing

  • In-person departmental meetings

  • Area-specific meetings for departmental leadership

  • Committees and Subcommittees within the Division of Pharmacy

  • Enhance and implement workflows to support regulatory compliance, including but not limited to:

  • USP standards

  • Inventory optimization

  • Accreditation standards

  • Drug shortage management

Education

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Certificate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program, or

  • Associate's degree, or

  • Additional years of equivalent experience

Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree

License / Certification

Required

  • Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP)

  • Current national pharmacy technician certification through:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or

  • National Health career Association (NHA)

Preferred

  • Current Intravenous Medication Certification (IV - Sterile Products) sponsored by:

  • An ACPE provider, or

  • An ASHP- or ASHP/ACPE-accredited pharmacy technician training program

  • Other PTCB assessment-based certificates or nationally recognized certifications relevant to job responsibilities

Experience

Required

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as a pharmacy technician in:

  • Hospital

  • Infusion center

  • Retail pharmacy

Preferred

  • Experience training pharmacy staff

  • Prior leadership experience

This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening.
