JOB SUMMARY

The Construction Technician provides skilled labor and equipment operation duties related to

water distribution system activities, including but not limited to acoustic leak detection;

construction of new water mains, replacement of mains, and the installation, repair and

maintenance of fire hydrants for the City of Hot Springs water system and the Royal water

system.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist in the installation and repair of water mains, water services and fire services.

Dig and backfill ditches, shovel gravel and dirt.

Repair streets where water line repairs have been made.

Sweep up debris and repair lawns or work sites.

Operate of all types of equipment including trucks, trailers, air compressors, jackhammers,

pipe wrenches, gasoline-operated ditch pumps, pipe saws, vibratory compactors and/or

other equipment tools and machinery associated with waterworks operations.

Assist in other departments as needed.

Perform On-Call duties as assigned.

Work overtime when required.

Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of and administrative superior. Reports to Crew Leader,

Superintendent, or Manager

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school graduation or equivalent. A minimum of two (2) years in the repair, replacement and

maintenance of water mains, water services, and fire services; or any equivalent of education

and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

A valid Arkansas Drivers License with a clean driving record.

If successful applicant has a valid Class A Arkansas Commercial Drivers License, they will be hired

in at Pay Grade 6B.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of construction and maintenance of water lines, water services and fire services.

Knowledge of operational hazards and safety precautions for working in public areas.

Knowledge of waterworks tools and piping practices; maintenance of jackhammers, pipe

wrenches, gasoline operated ditch pumps, pipe saws and vibratory compactors.

Knowledge of street names and locations (city and county).

Skill in the use and care of hand tools, light and heavy equipment.

Ability to operate trucks, trailers and other construction equipment and machinery.

Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, perform manual labor tasks

in wet locations and under varying weather conditions.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Frequently stands, walks, talks and hears; occasionally sits; uses hands to handle objects; reaches

with hands and arms; stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, climbs or balances; specific vision

requirements include close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust

focus; occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud; exposed to outdoor weather

conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and wet, humid conditions and

extreme heat (non-weather); works in high precarious places and near moving mechanical parts;

at risk for electrical shock and/or vibration.
