Job Title: Buyer / Procurement Specialist

Job Description

The Buyer / Procurement Specialist performs a full range of purchasing duties in alignment with established policies, procedures, and best practice protocols. The role focuses on maximizing cost-effective, ethical, efficient, timely, and professional purchasing practices to deliver strong value in a customer service–oriented environment. This position is responsible for purchasing goods and services, coordinating transactions with designated requisitioners, and supporting formal bidding, sourcing, negotiations, and other value-building initiatives as they are defined. Over time, the role may expand to include the development, execution, and maintenance of sourcing opportunities, contract review and execution, and additional responsibilities as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Perform purchasing of goods and services in accordance with established policies, procedures, and best practice protocols.

  • Coordinate purchasing transactions with company-appointed requisitioners to fulfill defined purchasing needs.

  • Support and participate in formal bidding activities to secure competitive and cost-effective suppliers.

  • Assist in sourcing activities to identify, qualify, and select suppliers that provide optimal value.

  • Engage in negotiations with suppliers to obtain favorable pricing, terms, and conditions while maintaining ethical standards.

  • Contribute to initiatives that maximize the value of purchasing activities, including cost reduction and value improvement efforts.

  • Maintain a strong customer service orientation when working with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.

  • Support the development, execution, and maintenance of sourcing opportunities as responsibilities are defined.

  • Review and execute contracts and related purchasing agreements as assigned.

  • Apply sound judgment to evaluate complex purchasing issues and help reconcile diverse opinions to achieve consensus among stakeholders.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and suppliers to ensure alignment on purchasing requirements and expectations.

  • Prepare and deliver purchasing-related information and presentations as needed to support decision-making.

Essential Skills

  • 1 to 5 years of professional, related work experience in purchasing, procurement, or a similar function.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or a related business field, with related experience and/or training.

  • Direct experience managing expenditures by organizing cross-functional and functional teams to reduce cost and improve value.

  • Strong purchasing and procurement knowledge, including buyer purchasing practices and supply chain awareness.

  • Demonstrated negotiation skills to secure favorable terms while maintaining ethical standards.

  • Superior communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

  • Strong influencing and persuasive abilities to drive alignment and support purchasing decisions.

  • Ability to independently evaluate complex issues and use sound judgment to sort through diverse opinions and achieve consensus.

  • Valid Hawaii driver’s license.

  • Access to a currently insured and registered vehicle.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in sourcing, purchasing, supplier management, or contract management.

  • Experience developing and using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to manage the performance of the supplier base.

  • Certification or active pursuit of certification from a recognized purchasing or supply management organization such as NAPM (or equivalent).

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams to drive cost reduction and value improvement initiatives.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing multiple purchasing activities and deadlines.

Work Environment

The Buyer / Procurement Specialist works in a professional, customer service–oriented environment that emphasizes ethical, efficient, and timely purchasing practices. The role involves frequent interaction with internal requisitioners and external suppliers, as well as coordination with cross-functional teams to support sourcing, bidding, and negotiation activities. Work is primarily office-based, with regular use of standard business technologies and communication tools, and may require local travel using a personally owned, insured, and registered vehicle in Hawaii. The position supports a structured, process-driven procurement function that values professionalism, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Honolulu, HI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
