Director, Data Product Delivery, GWAM Asia

The Director, Data Product Delivery, GWAM Asia is responsible for leading solution design, engineering and delivery of data products and capabilities in the Enterprise Data Lake (EDL) Ecosystem for GWAM Asia businesses across GWAM Asia markets. This role will lead a multifunctional team of business analysts, data engineers, DevOps engineers and quality engineers, and collaborate with business stakeholders in delivering data, reporting and analytics solutions for GWAM Asia businesses. This role will be the technical product owner of GWAM Asia assets in the EDL, and will own the product roadmap and delivery of ingestion, curation, common data model and consumption of data from the EDL. This role will strongly collaborate with Asia Data Office and interact with senior stakeholders to deliver a cross-product data strategy and wholistic architecture for each of the Asia markets spanning Manulife LifeCo and GWAM businesses.

The EDL ecosystem is a Databricks Lakehouse that leverages Microsoft Azure PaaS, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, ADLS, OpenAI and AKS.

This is a people leader role with direct reports. The role has a dual reporting relationship; reporting directly to AVP and Head of Data Strategy and Data Delivery, Asia Data Office in Hong Kong, and dotted to AVP and Head of GWAM Asia Data Delivery, GWAM Data Office in Toronto.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the solution design, engineering and delivery of data products for Asia businesses, including data products that cuts across LifeCo and GWAM businesses creating 360 vies of customers and agencies for Manulife for each of the Asia markets where GWAM operates.

  • Collaborated with Asia Data Office, GWAM Asia Technology and GWAM Asia AI Team to understand business needs and gaps, develop implementation plans and execute on the plans to meet business needs.

  • Collaborate with Asia and GWAM Data Offices, Asia Compliance offices and GWAM Data Governance to ensure critical data elements are documented with clear definition of roles and responsibilities, and appropriate data quality checks and data operations processes are in place to support business operations effectively.

  • Collaborate with GWAM Asia AI team to deliver on GWAM Asia AI mandate to drive accelerated business value from GWAM Asia data assets.

  • Ensure developed data and AI solutions for GWAM Asia are in alignment with GWAM Data Office and Asia Data Office standards, and meets Risk controls and local regulatory compliance.

  • Lead hands-on delivery of data engineering solutions, including coding (PySpark, Databricks), code reviews and overseeing technical delivery of other member of team.

  • Lead agile data solution delivery as a technical product owner, including roadmap planning, cross-team coordination (Architecture, Cloud Engineering, Support, Business stakeholders) for solution delivery, task assignments, code reviews, sprint demos, design reviews and sign-off.

  • Build and mentor a high performing team including attracting, developing and retaining talent.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, make recommendations on increasing scalability and robustness of platforms and solutions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Significant professional experience in design and development of cloud data solutions including data lakes, lake houses, data warehouses, business intelligence, analytics and AI (Gen AI, and AGI) solutions.

  • Experience in hands-on solution delivery on Microsoft Azure Data PaaS stack (Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, ADLS, OpenAI, AKS and Power BI)

  • Expert level command of Azure Databricks and Delta Lake, Databricks SQL Warehouse, Databricks Unity Catalogue, Azure Data Factory, ADLS, AKS and OpenAI models

  • Experience in the Wealth and Asset Management industry is an asset

  • Hands-on experience in designing and developing data pipeline/ETL processes in Azure/Databricks ecosystem.

  • Experience with delivery of Business Intelligence/Reporting and Analytics solutions (MLOps ecosystem and PowerBI/Fabric)

  • Ability to effectively collaborate and thrive in a complex multi-team environment, strong ability to manage a diverse set of stakeholders and communicate effectively with senior leaders.

  • Experience with DevSecOps practices and CI/CD tools such as GitHub and Jenkins

  • Experience in building, mentoring and retaining high performing technical teams.

  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Self-reliant and comfortable with a rapidly changing environment

  • Strong Customer service orientation and can-do mindset.
