Manulife AVP, Senior Counsel in Hong Kong, Hong Kong
General Description:
Report directly to General Counsel for Hong Kong and Macau, this role oversees and manages the works of legal counsel and work closely with internal and external stakeholders in Hong Kong, Macau, Asia and North America to provide legal and regulatory support. This position also has to provide advice on the strategic growth of Health and Group Life Insurance related matters of the company and the group, and on Macau Operations and Distribution. He/ She has to manage and advise on claims, complaints and litigation matters in Macau and develop strategies to resolve disputes efficiently while protecting the company’s interests.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee and manage the works of legal counsel and work closely with internal and external stakeholders in Hong Kong, Macau, Asia and North America to provide legal and regulatory support
• Provide advice on the strategic growth of Health and Group Life Insurance related matters of the company and the group
• Provide legal advice and support on Macau Operations and Distribution
• Manage and advise on claims, complaints and litigation matters in Macau and develop strategies to resolve disputes efficiently while protecting the company’s interests
• Work closely with investment affiliates and advise on general account investment related matters
• Advise on intra-group agreements and other general corporate, commercial and governance matters of the company and the group
• Provide legal advice and support on business projects, new business models and other strategic initiatives of the company and the group
• Advise on consultations of new laws and regulations in Hong Kong and Macau and support on regulatory submissions and filings to the IA, the AMCM and other relevant authorities
• Monitor and advise on legal and regulatory changes in Hong Kong and Macau, including updates from the IA, the AMCM and other relevant authorities
• Instruct, monitor and supervise the work of external counsel
• Prepare regular regulatory reports and assist in reporting exercises to senior management

• Provide legal advice balancing local, regional and global requirements, as well as the business
Key Shared Accountabilities:
• Partner with internal departments in the company to drive strategic initiatives
• Work closely with external stakeholders locally, regionally and globally to provide legal advice and regulatory support
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:
• Qualified solicitor in Hong Kong with minimum 15 years of post-qualification experience in the insurance or financial services industry of Hong Kong
• Proven knowledge in Hong Kong insurance laws and legal and regulatory framework in Macau
• Prior experience in working with the Insurance Authority (IA), the Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) or other financial regulatory bodies is a must
• Excellent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
• Self-motivated personality with passion to learn new knowledge in a fast-changing area
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Have good commercial sense and business acumen
• Strong leadership skills
• Good interpersonal skills with a team-oriented mindset and ability to build relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
