Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Pool Manager(s), a Summer Lifeguard at the City of Holbrook Public Pool is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers and maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment. This seasonal position involves monitoring water activities, enforcing safety rules, and providing emergency care when necessary.

Essential Job Functions:

The following duties are examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed. The goal of the Summer Lifeguard is to keep the City Public Pool running smoothly while ensuring the customers are well taken care of. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Surveillance: Monitor the pool area to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Rescue Operations: Perform rescues and administer first aid, CPR, or other emergency care as needed.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain order and prevent accidents.
  • Swimming Instruction: Teach swimming lessons and water safety courses.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the pool and surrounding areas, including but not limited to the lifeguard shack, bathrooms, and decks.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of incidents, rescues, and maintenance activities.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Receives directions from the assigned Pool Manager.

Other Duties:

  • Training: Lifeguards may be required to attend training sessions before the start of the season.
  • Work Hours: Varying shifts, including weekends and holidays. The pool is open from Memorial Day weekend until the start of school, weather permitting.
  • Work Environment: Outdoor work at the Holbrook Public Pool, with open swim sessions Sunday through Saturday, and night swim sessions Monday through Wednesday, and swim lessons.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Certifications: Current or ability to obtain lifeguard certification, First Aid, and CPR certifications (e.g., from the American Red Cross or equivalent).
  • Skills: Strong swimming skills, ability to stay calm under pressure, good communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Required Minimum age:

Physical Demands:

  • Sit, stand, walk, reach, talk, hear, see, and demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Occasionally required to exert up to 20 lbs of force or occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move inventory.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
