The Materials and Structural Analysis (MSD) Electron Microscopy (EM) business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries and ultimately change the world. The MSD Electron Microscopy (EM) business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflow solutions that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Field Service Engineer , you will serve as a recognized technical expert and leader, providing advanced installation, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated electron microscopy systems. You will play a critical role in resolving complex technical challenges, leading high-visibility customer situations, and driving continuous improvement across the service organization.

In this role, you will operate with a high degree of autonomy, acting as a go-to subject matter expert, while mentoring other engineers and partnering with cross-functional teams to enhance system performance and customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on-site installation, repair, calibration, testing, and maintenance of advanced electron microscopy systems, including:

  • Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM)

  • Focused Ion Beam (FIB) systems (https://www.thermofisher.com/us/en/home/electron-microscopy/life-sciences/volume-em/techniques/plasma-focused-ion-beam-sem.html)

  • Diagnose and resolve the most complex mechanical, electronic, vacuum, and software-related system issues across multiple platforms

  • Serve as a technical escalation point for other field service engineers and lead resolution of critical customer issues

  • Lead high-visibility customer situations, ensuring timely resolution and maintaining strong customer confidence

  • Provide formal mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to field service engineers; support training initiatives

  • Partner with engineering, product development, applications, and quality teams to drive system improvements and serviceability

  • Perform and optimize preventive maintenance strategies to improve system reliability and uptime

  • Build and maintain strategic customer relationships, acting as a trusted technical advisor

  • Deliver advanced customer training on system operation, maintenance, and best practices

  • Travel frequently to customer sites, sometimes on short notice, to resolve complex service issues

  • Maintain accurate and detailed service documentation, and contribute to improving service procedures and knowledge sharing

  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and quality standards in laboratory and industrial environments

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 8+ years of hands-on technical experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex analytical instrumentation such as SEM, TEM, FIB, or similar systems

  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing and repairing ultra-high vacuum systems and high voltage equipment

  • Proven ability to resolve complex, system-level technical issues independently

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Ability to travel up to 75% within assigned territory

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in laboratory environments

  • Proficiency in English required; additional languages beneficial

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of electron microscopy systems and subsystems

  • Strong electronics and mechanical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose issues to the component and system level

  • Experience serving as a technical lead or subject matter expert in a field service or engineering environment

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or training engineers

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, electrical schematics, and system diagrams

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication and customer engagement skills, with the ability to influence at multiple levels

  • Strong organizational and time management capabilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and service management platforms

  • Demonstrated success achieving high customer satisfaction and long-term relationship development
