The AWS Cloud infrastructure is built around Regions and Availability Zones (AZs). AWS Regions provide multiple, physically separated and isolated Availability Zones which are connected with low latency, high throughput, and highly redundant networking. These Availability Zones offer AWS customers an easier and more effective way to design and operate applications and databases, making them more highly available, fault tolerant, and scalable than traditional data center infrastructures. Amazon Web Services is looking for a highly motivated, commercially savvy Sr. Network Infrastructure Business and Vendor Developer to help grow and scale one of the world’s largest and most complex networks. We develop new and innovative ways to scale and expand our network, while delivering operational excellence to our stakeholders. This opportunity sits within our Metro Solutions organization where the team is responsible for developing and acquiring the network that drives Amazon’s internal infrastructure as well as connecting Amazon to the outside world. The Network Business developer will be a subject matter expert in the telecommunications marketplace, experienced with vendors, physical network infrastructure, optical technologies and business case development and robust financial analysis.

This individual will actively drive commercial vendor strategy, working with existing vendors, new vendors, AWS service teams, and internal customers to build and design a portfolio of network infrastructure solutions. This role requires collaboration, driving strategic initiatives, and executing commercial deals across the AWS network geography. By applying a unique blend of business and technology experience, you will work closely with both outside and internal teams to find creative, cost effective, and often innovative solutions to meet Amazon's ongoing growth and expansion needs worldwide.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. Key job responsibilities

· Serve as a key member of the North American Network Development team, driving overall network infrastructure strategy.

· Work closely with service owners to understand product roadmaps and devise programs to meet capacity requirements.

· Develop network infrastructure plans for approval by internal customers and stakeholders.

· Identify vendors and develop commercial solutions that solve for wavelengths, dark fiber and other network infrastructure capacity.

· Negotiate vendor contracts from a business and technical perspective in partnership with AWS Legal.

· Track information on overall telecom market segment trends and developments in terms of vendor technologies, coverage, cost and deal structures

· Work with finance partners to collaborate on budget, business case development, and deal analysis.

· Lead strategic network topology planning for our backbone and metro networks.

· Work closely with Network Planning teams to ensure that acquisitions meet topology requirements and budgets.

· Work closely with internal customers to understand product roadmaps, pipeline and to devise programs to meet capacity requirements.

· Cultivate relationships with infrastructure partners in new and existing Amazon expansion markets.

· Conduct detailed route analysis and engineering surveys, identifying and vetting existing network assets and proposed options for new build or expansion in markets of interest.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 10+ years telecommunications industry experience

  • Procurement and negotiations of dark fiber and wavelengths

  • Network planning or implementation at ISP, telecommunications operator, or CDN

  • Demonstrated ability to build complex financial models from scratch

  • Strong communication skills: excellent verbal and written abilities

  • Proven track record working across internal/external organizations

  • Ability to prioritize competing demands while meeting customer deadlines

  • Willingness to travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at a large network operator, OTT or Internet Service Provider.

  • Demonstrated understanding of global fiber and IP networks.

  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with conduit construction and fiber placement in outside plant environments.

  • Record of presenting and defending business cases to senior executives internally and obtaining approval. Proven ability to gain consensus among internal stakeholders within a company including commercial, technical, domestic, and international arms of an organization.

  • Experience interacting with senior executives and other management within your own company and externally; and working across commercial, technical, domestic, and international arms of an organization

  • Proven record of negotiating multiple large-scale network acquisitions (dark fiber, conduit).

  • Record of negotiating and executing right-of-way access agreements with DOT (Department of Transportation), utility, and pipeline operators.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
