Amazon Contaminated Lands Subject Matter Expert, AWS Environmental AMER Programs Team in Herndon, Virginia
Description
AWS Environmental’s AMER Programs team is looking for an experienced environmental professional to manage environmental risks and requirements throughout the development and operational lifecycle of data center infrastructure. This role will lead technical reviews of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and brownfield redevelopment evaluations. This role will provide technical expert advice on managing environmental liabilities associated with potential sites.
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies to enable the construction and operation of new AWS data centers and infrastructure. You will lead remedial investigations, remedial design, and cleanup activities, if required. Candidates will have experience successfully delivering Phase I and Phase II ESAs, quantitative environmental risk assessments, and managing site investigation and remediation projects, including brownfield redevelopment.
This role requires regular engagement with AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors. A successful candidate in this role will have a proven track record of delivering multiple, high-priority projects with tight timelines requiring strong communication with partner teams, outside consultants, internal and external counsel, and regulatory agencies.
• Position is onsite.
• Up to 25% travel may be required.
Key job responsibilities
• Review technical reports, assess environmental risks and requirements, and develop mitigation strategies to support data center siting and development strategies and site-specific project delivery.
• Conduct environmental due diligence activities, including evaluating Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations.
• Coordinate development of sampling and remedial action plans.
• Provide technical support on compliance with environmental laws and regulations related to site contamination.
• Align remedial activities with broader site development schedule and permitting considerations.
• Communicate environmental requirements to internal and external project partners and collaborate with regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, design engineers, legal teams, and project managers, to facilitate permitting and remedial processes and address environmental concerns.
• Coordinate with partner teams to optimize conceptual site plans accounting for environmentally sensitive areas and develop site development and permitting strategies that ensure that projects are environmentally responsible and meet required timelines.
• Coordinate and lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations in support of environmental permit acquisition and regional development strategies.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement, driving efficiencies, and developing initiatives to improve AWS’ management of environmental risks.
• Develop, manage, and track metrics to evaluate project delivery.

Basic Qualifications
Experience developing and implementing environmental compliance programs including regulated waste, water, and air regulations in accordance with applicable laws
Technical knowledge of environmental laws and regulations for contaminated lands and brownfield development
3+ years of experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements
Subject matter expertise in identifying and managing risks and liabilities associated with contaminated lands and brownfield developments

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
