Medtronic Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist in Heerlen, Netherlands
At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.
A Day in the Life
As a Senior EHS Specialist, you will play a vital role in deploying and embedding Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) policies and procedures in line with Dutch regulations and Medtronic’s global standards. You will perform workplace and specific risk assessments — covering areas such as ionising radiation, ergonomics, manual handling, driver safety, fire protection, PPE, biological agents, and chemical safety—for both onsite and field-based operations.
In this dynamic position, you will rotate between our Heerlen, Maastricht, and Geleen locations, delivering expert EHS support to a diverse workforce—including office-based and remote employees, as well as field, sales, and service/repair teams who regularly operate in hospital environments across the region. Reporting directly to the EHS Manager, you will work closely with stakeholders to maintain a safe and compliant workplace.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:
Provide leadership and direction for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of key EHS risk programs such as driver safety, ionizing radiation, biohazards, emergency preparedness, employee preventive medical examinations, and ergonomics. Ensure these programs comply with regulatory requirements, align with Medtronic EHS Standards, and support EMEA and Corporate strategies and initiatives
Implement a targeted health, safety, and environmental risk management program to identify, assess, and control illness and injury risks, minimize environmental impacts, and ensure compliance with local regulatory requirements
Fulfil the role of Prevention Advisor for one or more sites within the Netherlands Commercial organization, including maintenance of the preventive medical examinations program for all Netherlands sites
Partner with Medtronic sub-regions, business units, and functions at all levels of the organization to provide EHS technical expertise and promote a positive EHS culture
Collaborate with relevant external agencies, including Fire Services, Health and Safety Authorities, and Environmental Agencies. Additionally, partner with internal stakeholders to integrate EHS into processes and business decisions
Facilitate EHS engagement and communication through regular EHS committee meetings, active involvement programs, management reporting at both corporate and local levels, newsletters, and other communication forums
Execute compliance-based tasks such as conducting effective incident investigations and root cause analyses, participating in EHS audits, and implementing remedial actions within agreed SLAs
Required Knowledge and Experience/Must have:
Possess a relevant qualification such as a NEBOSH Certificate, EHS accreditation, or a degree in Engineering, Science, or EHS
Strong working knowledge of EHS and Risk Management legislation and principles, with experience in local and/or regional EHS regulatory compliance, as well as developing, implementing, and managing EHS programs
Minimum of 5 years of previous EHS and Prevention Advisor experience
Fluency in both Dutch and English
At least 2 years’ experience delivering trainings and presentations, working on projects, or developing project management skills. Candidates must also be highly computer literate, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Must be extremely organized, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, prioritize workload effectively, adapt to a constantly changing environment, and demonstrate an outgoing, friendly, and ‘Can Do’ attitude
Health & Safety experience within the medical device industry would be an advantage for this role. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a customer-focused attitude and be both diplomatic and assertive, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organisation. A positive and professional approach is essential, along with flexibility, strong analytical skills, and a proven ability to solve problems.
