DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation ACCOUNTABLE TO: Parks and Recreation Director SUMMARY OF WORK: Oversees seasonal crew of park maintenance employees. Establishes work schedules, assigns duties, oversees regular maintenance and inspection of parklands, repairs and maintains equipment.JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Nature of Work: This position performs skilled technical duties in the maintenance and repair of small engines and equipment. Position may work in extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions; may work on ladder or bucket truck. Position requires safety procedures in working with equipment, chemicals, and near power lines. May work outside the City’s normal working days/hours. Personal Contacts: Daily contact with supervisor and other parks and public works employees. Coordinates duties for usage of some city equipment for certain projects. Supervision Received: Position is mainly self-directed; daily meetings with Director. Supervision Exercised: Oversees work force of typically 8 seasonal crewmembers. Essential Functions: Position requires ability to communicate; supervise employees; lift 75 pounds; walk long distances on uneven ground; use hand tools; drive a truck and operate power equipment; lift and maneuver heavy objects into place; repair a variety of power equipment. Must be able to form, pour and work concrete.AREAS OF JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE: • Identifies needs in terms of park maintenance requirements; assigns duties to the crew; assists in hiring of personnel; assists in conducting employee safety training. • Assists in development of major projects for park development or improvement; oversees projects where park crew is involved; operates power equipment; assists with park maintenance; assists with sprinkler installation, tree maintenance, concrete work, and use of fertilizers and pesticides. Removes snow and ice on city and park sidewalks and parking lots. • Maintains park equipment; services and repairs equipment; diagnoses mechanical defects in various equipment; purchases new equipment in consultation with Director. • Performs other related duties as required.JOB REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge: This position requires a knowledge of concrete, small engines; underground sprinkler systems; plumbing; trees and shrubs; fertilizer and pesticide use and regulations. Skills: This position requires skills in diagnosing mechanical defects and in repair and maintenance of small engines and equipment. Abilities: This position requires the ability to: operate all equipment and trucks; supervise; plan and organize; adhere to safety procedures; lift heavy objects; climb ladders; walk on uneven ground; visually inspect grounds; communicate effectively; follow verbal and written instructions; establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to: • High School diploma or GED Equivalent. • Experience with concrete, small engine repair and maintenance required. • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Montana Commercial Driver's License. • Must possess or obtain a pesticide license. • Experience with lawn and tree maintenance preferred. • Must possess or acquire Community First Aid or equivalent.JOB PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:Evaluation of this position will be based primarily upon performance of the preceding requirements and duties.
